I’ve now read THREE separate cases where the recommended solution for a dog displaying frustration, anxiety, vocalisation, over-arousal, or breed-related behavioural needs was… to spray them with water.
THAT'S NOT TRAINING. THAT IS BULLYING AND DAMAGING TO THE ANIMAL AND YOUR BOND.
Spraying a dog with water may interrupt a behaviour in the moment, but it does absolutely nothing to address the reason the behaviour is happening in the first place.
💧 It can increase anxiety and stress.
💧 It can damage trust between dog and owner.
💧 It can suppress warning signals without changing the underlying emotion.
💧 It can create negative associations with people, environments, or situations.
💧 It risks turning a frustrated dog into a fearful or defensive one.
Behaviour is communication.
PUNISHMENT IS NEVER THE ANSWER.
The answer is understanding.
✔️ Meet the dog’s behavioural and breed-specific needs.
✔️ Provide appropriate enrichment and outlets.
✔️ Teach alternative skills.
✔️ Build confidence through positive experiences.
✔️ Reduce stress and increase choice and predictability.
✔️ Address the cause, RATHER THAN TRY TO "FIX" the behaviour
When we stop asking “How do I stop this behaviour?” and start asking “Why is this behaviour happening?” that’s when real change begins.
If you’re struggling with your dog’s behaviour, don’t reach for the water spray bottle. Reach for knowledge, understanding, and support instead.
