24/01/2025
Figures from 2024 across both sites (Langtoft & Flamborough)
207 hedgehogs/hoglets taken in
33 passed away within 24 hours
39 passed away within 36 hours
94 returned back to the wild
18 still in care, awaiting better weather
Hedgehogs that pass away before 36 hours are sadly hogs that arrive at rescue too late. The message is clear, if a hog needs help it needs it quickly, never delay in seeking advise (always have the patient in a high sided box first tho, the number of calls that rescues get when the hog hasn't been captured is huge). A hog out during the day is not ok (generally, unless nursing mum wanting 5 mins peace, a quick drink or call of nature or more bedding).
Take care when gardening, moving sheds etc, you never know where a hog will have made a nest and could have hoglets.
Water & supplementary feeding (good quality kitten biscuits) all year round, will help your hogs. As the climate has changed not all hogs will hibernate, some do & wake up thirsty and hungry & some sleep till spring. There isn't any natural food available for them in winter.
Look at what you can do in your garden to create a great environment for hogs favourite foods of caterpillars and beetles, eating too many slugs, snails & earthworms can make them poorly. And other wildlife will benefit too.
