Really well written post and I couldn't agree more.

Joint injections absolutely have a place, but should be used as part of a big picture approach.

✨🐴Welcome New Approved Member Ruth Fisher- Bit and Bridle Fitting Consultant 🐴✨

Ruth Fisher joins the APBBF with an exceptional 30 years of professional experience in the equine industry. Ruth’s approach perfectly embodies our "Unity in Welfare" mission. She is a professional who has dedicated her life to looking past the symptoms, always questioning "why," and truly understanding the horse as an individual.

A LIFETIME OF EXPERIENCE
Ruth’s journey began with a childhood immersed in horses, leading to a career that spans running a successful training and full livery yard for over 15 years, competing in eventing, showjumping, and dressage, and even whipping in for a Bloodhound pack for seven seasons. Having completed her BHS training and exams early in her career, her practical horsemanship is incredibly deep-rooted and versatile across multiple disciplines.

A HORSE-CENTRED APPROACH
As a LANTRA certified fitter, Ruth combines her decades of hands-on knowledge with a deep understanding of equine biomechanics, classical training, rehabilitation, and behaviour.

For Ruth, a bit and bridle assessment goes far beyond the hardware. She looks at the whole picture—assessing how a horse moves, carries tension, and responds emotionally to the tack. By carefully considering facial anatomy, posture, asymmetry, muscular development, dental history, and rider influence, she ensures the bridle works with the horse's body rather than restricting it.

📍 COVERAGE AREA
Ruth is available for consultations across the UK, covering the following regions:
👉 Counties: Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, and South Yorkshire.

If you are looking for a highly experienced, deeply analytical, and welfare-driven professional to help you build a better partnership with your horse, Ruth is a fantastic asset to owners in her area. Please join us in giving her a warm welcome to the APBBF!

⁉️ Why Bit & Bridle Fit Research Matters

Bit and bridle advice has previously been shaped by tradition or commercial interests. Which is why we ground our CPD and training in practice-led knowledge and peer-reviewed science.

All members get full access to our Research Hub, where we compile the latest and most relevant studies and summarise them from a bit and bridle fitter perspective.

Find out more about the benefits of membership starting from only £29 per year. https://apbbf.com/membership

Following on from the post about two wrinkles and the difference in how the two bits sat in the horse’s mouth…

The two bits actually had exactly the same mouthpiece.
(Disclaimer — this photo is a different brand, but exactly the same style as the one used in yesterday’s post. I forgot to take a photo once it was out of his mouth!)

So why does the hanging cheek sit higher, even though at the corners of the lips it can actually look lower?
Because the cheekpiece design changes how the mouthpiece is supported inside the mouth.

On the hanging cheek, the mouthpiece is more supported and stable. As you can see from my very technical red lines 🤣, the mouthpiece stays at a much more even height across the mouth.
The loose ring, however, naturally “sags” or drops in the middle. A loose ring also generally needs to be fitted slightly larger to avoid the lips being pinched between the ring and the mouthpiece. That extra width allows even more drop through the centre of the mouth.

A hanging cheek is a fixed ring bit, so there’s no loose moving ring that can trap the lip, meaning it can usually be fitted a little more snugly.

Those two things together are why the same lozenge mouthpiece on two different cheekpieces can sit in completely different places inside the horse’s mouth.

This is also why many geldings and stallions with high canines really struggle to accommodate certain loose rings comfortably. Some mares with tushes can also have the same issue, though far less commonly.

This is exactly why I find the old “two wrinkles” rule far too simplistic.
Two bits can appear similar at the lips while sitting entirely differently internally.
The outside only tells part of the story.
The anatomy inside the mouth matters far more.

And before anyone starts frothing at the keyboard 😅…
You absolutely do not have to agree with me. Healthy discussion is fine. But there’s a difference between discussion and rudeness.

I share what I see, day in and day out, in real horses’ mouths.
