💭 You’ll often see the words “stress free” used when talking about grooming. It sounds perfect doesn’t it — but here’s my honest take: grooming is very rarely completely stress free.
What even is a stress-free environment? 🤷🏼♀️ This is decided by the individual dog not by us. Dogs can experience different emotions in new situations. For some, the bath is a breeze. For others, the bath is terrifying.
What really matters is recognising those emotions and working with them. As a holistic grooming professional my job isn’t to promise your pet a life without stress, much as I’d like to do that — the reality is I try to:
🐾 Minimise it wherever possible
🐾 Draw on the science-backed methods I’ve studied to keep pets comfortable and supported
🐾 Build trust over time so grooming feels safer and easier
✨ So, despite being Fear-Free and Low-Stress Handling certified, I’ll never promise grooming is completely stress free. What I can promise is that every animal in my care is treated with patience and respect for their individual needs — with the goal of keeping fear, anxiety, and stress levels as low as possible.
I am honest with my clients and with this comes trust — and that’s the foundation for truly kind grooming. 💛
Take today, for example. I spent a session with a very anxious Border Terrier. Her owner stayed, and together we focused not on “getting the bath done” but on helping her dog build confidence.
🐾 Did she have a bath? No.
🐾 Did she even get in the bath? No.
🐾 But did she manage to get all four paws onto the steps up to the tub when at first she wouldn’t even try? Yes. 👏🏻
🐾 Did she stop shaking? Yes.
🐾 Did she return to the steps and try to climb them on her own with no prompting or luring when her owner and I chatted? Yes.
🐾 Did she seek me out for a fuss at the end? Yes. 🥰
🐾 Did I get her to pose for a photo for the grids? Absolutely not!
In just 40 minutes, her whole demeanour changed from quite literally a shaking pup to an eager to explore one, her body language changed, she had a more relaxed stance and her ears were less tensed — because the session was about trust, not ticking boxes. The bath will come, but when she’s confident enough! I believe in her.
