The heat has been crazy the last couple of days, so this is an important reminder for all dog owners.
Hot weather can be really dangerous for dogs. They can overheat much faster than we do, especially on walks, in cars, on hot pavements, or during too much play in the sun.
Heatstroke can become serious very quickly, so please take extra care with your dogs during this weather.
What you should be doing:
Walk early in the morning or later in the evening when it is cooler.
Avoid walking during the hottest part of the day.
Check the pavement with your hand. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog’s paws.
Make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water available.
Keep them in shaded, cool areas.
Never leave your dog in a car, even for a few minutes.
Avoid heavy exercise, ball throwing, or long walks in the heat.
Watch for signs of overheating, such as heavy panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, confusion, or struggling to settle.
Some dogs are more at risk, including puppies, older dogs, overweight dogs, flat-faced breeds, thick-coated dogs, and dogs with health conditions.
Your dog will not miss one walk, but one walk in extreme heat could put them at serious risk.
Keep them cool, keep them safe, and when in doubt, skip the walk.
