Children vs Dogs & The Parallels In Behaviour.
Before you read this, Iām not saying dogs are children.
Theyāre not.
But when it comes to learning, development, boundaries, emotional regulation and behaviour, there are some interesting parallels Iāve noticed.
Letās think about it.
If every time a child asked for a toy, sweet or treat and you immediately gave it to themā¦
What would happen when they donāt get what they wanted?
ā¢Frustration
ā¢Tantrums
ā¢Demanding behaviour
ā¢A lack of resilience
ā¢A lack of respect
Now think about dogs.
If every bark, paw, nudge, whine or demand for attention gets rewarded. Why would we expect anything different?
āø»
If a child never had a bedtime routine, never rested properly and was constantly stimulated throughout the dayā¦
Would we expect them to be calm, focused and emotionally balanced?
Probably not.
Yet many dogs are constantly switched on, constantly entertained, constantly stimulated and never taught how to switch off and relax.
āø»
If a child was never allowed to fail, never allowed to experience frustration and was protected from every challenge in lifeā¦
How would they learn confidence, resilience and independence?
The same applies to dogs.
Growth happens when they learn to work things out, cope with challenges and build confidence through experience.
āø»
If a child was fed a poor diet full of processed foods and sugarā¦
Would we expect that to have no effect on their energy, concentration, mood or behaviour?
Of course not.
So why would we assume nutrition has no impact on our dogs? Especially with the garbage dog food sold in most stores today.
āø»
If a child or teenager had unlimited freedom, no boundaries, no consequences and nobody providing guidanceā¦
Would we expect good decision-making?
Or would we expect confusion, poor choices and a lack of self-discipline?
Dogs are no different.
Freedom without guidance isnāt kindness.
Itās responsibility without preparation.
āø»
The goal isnāt to control every aspect of your dogās life.
The goal is to provide enough structure, guidance, boundaries and support that they can learn how to make good choices on their own.
Because whether weāre talking about children or dogs, one thing remains true:
Love is important.
But love without guidance rarely creates confidence, stability or balanced behaviour.
