Introducing distraction odours is a great way to build scentwork confidence for you and your dog.

Having to ignore strong smells to find their target odour brings clarity for our dogs.

This is also excellent preparation for nosework games skills assessments, competitions and for ScentOps trials.

Congratulations to our puppy class graduates who have set awsome foundations 🥳

It’s wonderful to see your progress from shy puppies to confident pre-teens as we developed puppy socialisation.

We built key foundation skills including lead walking, recall, leave, stay, toilet training, puppy biting and cooperative care.

Hope to see you all in the follow on dog skills class as we move into adolescence.

Super proud of Maddy getting 1st in Bronze level Scent Ops scentwork competition 🥳

I often talk about how emotions or pain affect sniffing ability in scentwork and can explain why a dog may not find on a particular search where they would normally.

Our second competition was in very busy smallish rooms and Maddy felt a bit overwhelmed. She tried to search but her mind was just not able to focus fully as she was also thinking about the environment.

This is where Not For Competition (NFC) is so helpful for building confidence. We turned our competition into NFC part way through allowing us to reduce the search area size so that she could finish the search on a positive find. This will help her for the next time she has a similar environment to search where she will less worried.

NFC is also great for inexperienced dogs and handlers to practice a competition search in a new place or new level without the pressure of competition.

Scentwork classes & :1 sessions this week learned a Nosework Game that builds and tests ability to find multiple hides in a small cluttered space.

This is a fun search that is tested in skills assessments and Nosework Games competitions.

Teams worked at their own level having fun finding the hidden odours.
