This mornings call was a sad one, this bird would have been like this at this lake all its life, and this didn't happen overnight either, why nobody else reported it is upsetting me.
A report of a Swan with what the finders though was a broken wing at Hardwick Hall, though that's not what's going on here.
What's happened to this cygnets wing, is a condition called angel wing.
Angel wing is a condition where the last joint of the wing twists outward, it can be corrected with early intervention, though sometimes the damage when left is too great.
The twist causes the flight feathers to stick out at an unnatural angle and they get damaged, hence why this one is bleeding, it's getting its adult feathers in and simultaneously destroying them.
The deformity is generally not painful but prevents the bird from flying, making it unable to migrate or escape predators.
This was a simple catch, and the parents didn't put up much fight, I think they knew their youngster isn't right, a swab hook, two people, and two large blankets/towels, we got them straight away.
This bird will be transferred to Pawz and then onto the waterfowl sanctuary for treatment.
