At Muttley Crew we feel puppy class shouldn't just about teaching your pup to sit.

Here, we prepare our puppies for the big wide world.

We grow confidence and instill optimism.

We work on lead skills and teach your pup to focus and engage with you, even in the face of distractions.

We work on recall and building value in being close to you.

We work on socialisation, and exposing them to new and novel things in a calm and positive way.

We also discuss strategies for the things most puppy owners struggle with like toilet training, nipping and biting, what to do when the witching hour strikes and so much more!

Puppy class is way more than just teaching Sit, Heel and Stay!

We have a new enrollment for Monday 4th August at 6pm with spaces available. Class is £85 for the entire 4 week course with opportunity to progress to other classes like Beyond the Basics and Awesome Adolescents.

Our classes for growing calmness (peaceful pups) and household manners (mischief to magic) also have a few spaces left!

🧩 Problem-Solving Is Part of the Learning

Let your dog make choices.
🐾 Give them a chance to figure it out instead of jumping in right away.
That “aha!” moment is where real learning happens.

Giving choices is a form of cognitive enrichment, which is just as important as physical or sensory enrichment. Dogs thrive when they’re mentally stimulated, and choice-rich environments:

Prevent boredom

Encourage problem-solving

Lead to calmer behavior overall

🧠 Example: Nosework and scent games are great because the dog chooses how to search, when to alert, and how to navigate the space. You’re there to support—not control—the process.

Dogs who feel they have a choice are:
✔️ More confident
✔️ Less reactive
✔️ More engaged in training
✔️ Happier overall

A few examples would be -

Which reward they want:
Let your dog choose between a toy, a treat, or affection as reinforcement.

Pick their reinforcer placement:
Deliver the reward where they want to go (e.g., throw the treat away vs. deliver at your feet).

Cue-free sessions:
Let the dog offer behaviors without giving a cue—then reward their initiative.

End the session:
Use a “finished?” cue and allow them to walk away if they’re done. If they stay engaged, continue!

Don’t rush the reps—celebrate the little lightbulb moments 💡

🧠🐾 What Do You Think Wednesday
“Do dogs feel guilt?”

Picture the scene...
You come home to a shredded pillow. Your dog looks guilty… but are they really?

👉 What do you think:
Do dogs feel guilt, or are they just reacting to our tone and body language?

Short Answer:
🐶 No — at least not in the way humans do. What we often interpret as “guilt” is actually appeasement behaviour or a response to our body language and tone, not true remorse.

💡 What’s Actually Happening:
When dogs look “guilty” (avoiding eye contact, lowered head, tucked tail), they’re likely reacting to your cues — your posture, voice, or energy — not because they “know” they did something wrong.

Example:
If you come home and tell your dog off for chewing something (even hours after), they may crouch or look guilty. But they don’t associate that with the actual chewing — they’re responding to your current emotion, not a past event.

🧠 Fun Fact:
Studies have shown that dogs display “guilty” behaviour even when they’ve done nothing wrong — if their human looks upset. That tells us it’s not about morality, it’s about social survival and emotional awareness.

💬 Tell us what you think: Can dogs feel guilt — yes, no, or maybe?

🎯🐾 Training Tip Tuesday: Timing is Everything! 🐾🎯
If your dog isn’t “getting it,” it might not be the what — it might be the when. ⏱️

👉 Training tip:
Mark and reward the behavior the moment it happens — not 2 seconds later.

🔑 Why it matters:
Dogs learn by association. If you’re late with your reward (even by a second or two), they might think they’re being praised for sitting down — when really, they just scratched their ear or looked away.

✅ Use a marker word like “Yes!” or a clicker to tell your dog exactly what they did right, then deliver the treat. (I prefer a marker word because I find clickers fiddly)

🧠 It’s like taking a snapshot of the behavior you love and saying, “THAT! Do that again!”

💡 Try This:
Practice your timing with a simple sit. As soon as your dog’s bum touches the ground — click or say “Yes!” — then reach for the treat. The same works for a down, or a spin, or any behaviour that youd like to see more of.

📲 Save this post to remember next time you’re wondering why something “isn’t sticking.”

🐾💙 Motivation Monday: You Are Their Whole World 💙🐾
Your dog doesn’t care how clean your house is.
They don’t mind that you skipped training yesterday.
They’re not judging your mood or your messy bun. 😅

To them, you’re the sun and moon.
The bringer of walks. The keeper of treats.
The one who makes everything feel safe.

👉 Every tail wag when you walk in the door? That’s pure joy.
👉 Every glance during a walk? That’s trust.
👉 Every time they lean into your leg or curl up by your feet? That’s love.

You don’t have to be a professional trainer.
You just have to show up, be kind, and keep trying.
Because to your dog, you’re already enough. 💫

So this Monday, take a deep breath. Hug your dog. And remember — you’re doing just fine. You got this! 💪

🌟 Sunday Spotlight: Meet Bronny the Brave Greyhound 🌟
When I first met Bronny, she was a gentle retired greyhound struggling with severe separation anxiety. Being left alone—even for just a few minutes—would send her into panic. She’d pace, cry, and in moments of distress, she even began eating her own p**p. 💔

It wasn’t a behavior problem. It was an emotional one. Bronny wasn’t “being bad” — she was scared, confused, and trying to cope the only way she knew how.

Together with her amazing, dedicated family, we:
✅ Built a safe, predictable routine
✅ Introduced slow, structured alone-time training
✅ Used enrichment activities to build calm
✅ Gave her outlets for stress relief and confidence building
✅ Introduced some supplements to help promote calmness and aid digestion.

And the progress? 🙌
Bronny can now rest calmly alone for short periods, her stress levels are decreasing, and that heartbreaking coping behavior is fading away. She's learning that being alone doesn't mean being abandoned — and that’s huge.

Her journey isn’t over — but the transformation already speaks volumes about what patience, compassion, and positive training can do. 💙

Let’s hear it for Bronny and her family for showing us that healing takes time — but it is absolutely possible.

🐾 Trick Tutorial: Teach Your Dog Leg Weaves with Luring! 🐾
(aka that cool move where your dog weaves between your legs as you walk 👟🐕)

✨ It looks fancy, but it’s fun, easy, and a great way to build focus and body awareness!

🔁 Step-by-Step with Luring:
Start Standing Still
Stand with your legs a bit apart. Have your dog in front of you and a treats in both of your hands.

Lure Through One Leg
Use the treat to lure your dog from front to back through one leg. Reward!

Bring Them Around
Guide them in a U-shape back to the front of your other leg.

Lure Through the Other Leg
Lure them through that leg (back to front this time). Reward again!

Chain It Together
Once they’re confident, slowly add movement. Step forward as you lure them through each leg in sequence. Think: step, lure, step, lure.

Add a Cue
Once they’re consistently weaving, add a verbal cue like “Weave!” before starting.

✅ Training Tips:

Keep it upbeat! Use your happy voice 🎉

Start slow — don’t rush the footwork

Use high-value treats and short sessions

Practice on soft ground if your dog is new to trick training

This is what I call a 'happy' behaviour and helps to empower our dogs in new environments where perhaps they feel a little unsure. Its a skill that grows engagement with YOU and can boost confidence too. Have some fun with it!

📽 Save this post to try later, and tag us when your dog nails it!

🎓🐾 Congratulations to Our Group Class Graduates! 🐾🎓
Big tail wags and round of a-paws for our amazing pups and their dedicated humans who just wrapped up our latest group training classes! 🎉👏

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen:
✅ Puppies growing in confidence and optimism. (human owners too!)
✅ Recalls get faster (and way more fun!)
✅ Leashes loosen (no more stressful strolls!)
✅ Focus flourish
✅ And understanding our dogs just a little bit better 💙

Each team showed up, put in the work, and made HUGE strides. Whether it was mastering polite greetings, staying calm around distractions, or learning that tasty treats come faster when we sit first 😉 — you crushed it.

We’re so proud of each and every one of you. Training isn’t just about obedience — it’s about connection, communication, and trust. And you’ve built something special. 💫
