Every worktop takes a longer road than most people expect before it reaches a kitchen.

It starts on the CNC bed, cutting openings and shaping edges to a digital plan, then moves by forklift as each slab is checked and guided into position. The final stage is done by hand, polishing pads working every edge until it runs smooth under a fingertip, ready to travel out to site.

Worktop thickness is one of the first decisions in any kitchen design, and it changes more than just the edge you see.

A slimmer 20mm line suits contemporary, minimalist spaces. 30mm brings more visual weight and tends to suit traditional kitchens. And a mitred edge lets a worktop read as thick as you like at the join, two pieces joined at 45 degrees, without needing a solid slab of that depth throughout.

There's no universal right answer, it comes down to your cabinetry, your room's proportions and the finish you're working towards.

If you're deciding on thickness for your own kitchen, message us, we're glad to talk it through.

From slab to finished surface, every piece from The Quartz Worktop Company passes through more hands than most people realise.

It starts in the yard, where slabs are stored upright and moved into position by forklift, ready for the next stage. Inside the workshop, our CNC machine handles the heavy lifting, cutting sink openings and shaping edges from a digital plan before anyone picks up a hand tool, with water keeping every blade and disc cool as it works.

From there it's down to hand finishing: respirators and ear defenders on, polishing pads smoothing every edge until it's ready to run a hand along without catching on a single point.

It's slow, deliberate work, and it's why the finished piece looks the way it does.

Pietra Nube has the softest cloud-like texture, a warm white ground with barely-there taupe veining that reads closer to limewashed stone than a bold marble.

In this kitchen it wraps the island in a full waterfall edge, paired with pale oak cabinetry, woven rush stools and a terracotta vase that leans into the same warm, natural palette. The surface stays quiet enough to let the whole room breathe.

Up close, the veining is soft grey threads breaking up the surface without ever competing with it, calm even under close inspection.

If this softer, quieter tone is what you're after, a quick message is all it takes to arrange a sample.

Calacatta Borghini runs floor to ceiling in this kitchen, one continuous sweep of white ground and soft grey veining behind the sink and glass display cabinetry.

Warm oak cabinetry and glass-fronted units with internal lighting sit either side of the splashback, letting the marble read as the room's backdrop rather than just a surface behind the taps. The island continues the material at worktop height, keeping the same veining language running through the space.

Taking a slab to ceiling height like this means working with the full panel size from the outset, positioning the veining before a single cut is made so the movement reads as one uninterrupted piece rather than stacked sections.

A splashback at this scale is a bigger commitment than most kitchens call for, get in touch with us if you're weighing one up and we'll talk through what it takes.

Onyx Linear Marble runs its bands the full length of this vanity, caramel, grey and soft cream laid out to move continuously across a 100mm thick worktop.

Two handcrafted basins are carved directly into the stone, and every vein has been matched between them so the pattern reads as one continuous sweep rather than two separate pieces. Warm brass fittings and dark oak panelling let the stone carry the room.

Matching linear veining across two basins this precisely means selecting the exact run of slab and cutting with the pattern in mind from the first cut, not after.

Every worktop has a journey before it ever reaches a kitchen. This is a look at some of it.

Slabs arrive by crane, get checked, wrapped and loaded, then travel out to site in one piece. From there it is careful, considered work, wheeling finished pieces through a home mid-build without a mark, fitting a curved fluted island base on site, matching a mitred edge so the join disappears into the stone.

Arabescato Orobico wraps this island from base to worktop, the same sweeping bands of grey, taupe and charcoal running unbroken across every face.

Full cladding like this turns the island into the room's centrepiece rather than just its worktop. Set against dark oak flooring, brass fittings and the greenery beyond the crittall-style windows, the stone does most of the talking.

Getting the movement to read as one continuous piece across four faces takes exact panel matching at every mitred edge, so the pattern never breaks stride as it turns the corner.

Breccia Capria Marble is bookmatched down the centre, so the veining folds inward like a reflection, deep aubergine and warm gold meeting in the middle before settling into pale, quiet stone.

In this kitchen by Roundhouse Design, the marble runs floor to ceiling as a feature wall, paired with olive green shaker cabinetry, a soft blush island and brass fittings that pick out the gold in the veining, with herringbone oak grounding the scheme underfoot. The marble carries the room rather than competing with it.

Symmetrical movement like this depends on careful slab selection and precise cutting, matching the pattern so the mirror line falls exactly where it should.

Not every kitchen needs drama. Some just need to be exactly right.

Bianco Shimmer is part of the QWC Quartz Range: a clean near-white ground with fine silver flecks that catch the light without announcing themselves. Consistent across the full surface, practical for everyday use, and calm enough to work alongside almost any palette.

Shown here in a visualised contemporary kitchen setting, it sits comfortably with white cabinetry, warm oak, and brushed steel without tipping the space in any one direction.

If you would like a sample or want to discuss your project, we would be glad to hear from you.
