Dogs have been a constant and cherished part of my life, each one adding a unique chapter to my journey. My adventures began with a spirited Beagle, my dad's dog, whose nose for adventure led h

im on countless explorations. As I welcomed Westies, a Rottweiler/Labrador mix, a Cocker Spaniel, and various Labradors into my life, I quickly realised the importance of understanding canine behaviour. My Scottie, with his feisty demeanor, taught me about resilience and loyalty. My West Highland Terrier with his playful but challenging nature ignited my passion and motivation to dive deeper into the world of canine behaviour studies. I’ve been actively pursuing ongoing personal development in this field, focusing on positive reinforcement and games-based training. This approach has been particularly helpful for my anxious and sometimes reactive dogs. By incorporating fun and engaging methods into our training sessions, I’ve seen remarkable progress, allowing my pups to thrive in a more relaxed and confident manner. Of course, dog ownership isn’t all about training and challenges. I treasure our long walks in the woods, where we explore nature together, stretch our legs and clear our heads. Playing tug, fetch, and teaching them little tricks keep their minds stimulated and our relationship strong. These moments of joy remind me of the simple pleasures of life with dogs, turning every day into an adventure filled with love and laughter.

After a quick, erm, toilet break out in the very heavy rain, Coco and I enjoyed some playtime.

I am very excited to announce that in October I start my journey to becoming a qualified Canine Clinical Behaviourist, presuming I pass my level 6 diploma. Super excited and nervous. Hoping to offer my services alongside the dog walking.

New kid on the block. Buster, a Schnauzer, will be walking with me over the next week or so. Look at that face, he’s just gorgeous and a proper character. Close in temperament to a terrier, and we all know I love a terrier.
Fun fact - schnauze means snout or muzzle, as they were German farm dogs used for finding vermin and also herding livestock.

One of my little girl pup's that I walk has come into season. Her owners and I realised about a week ago that she was feeling a little pessimistic or nervy, a little more cuddly and that her season was approaching and low and behold, she is, a week later.

Many females will carry on feeling anxious for up to 90 days post season, which is when their hormone levels return to normal. Have patience when they are worried, give extra cuddles ( photo of Coco with my dad who joined me on a visit a while back), play easy games that won't knock their confidence. Let them rest more.

There is great advice on the Kennel Club website: https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/health-and-dog-care/health/health-and-care/a-z-of-health-and-care-issues/seasons-and-being-in-heat/ which also states - Walk her on a lead at quieter times of the day, or in places where there are fewer dogs
Avoid taking her around to other people’s houses who have unneutered males, or to any socialisation classes
Avoid leaving her alone in the garden. Some males may be able to smell that she is in heat and may try to get into your garden to mate with her
If you have any unneutered male dogs in the house, and do not want them to mate, then you may need to keep them separated

Have to admit I was concerned that my unneutered Scottie at home would become a bit full of himself and macho if he could smell Coco's scent on me, but he just hasn't realised. Phew!
