A special thank you to Jamie and Sophie from Shear Alpacas who have sheared our herd this morning. The alpacas were desperate to get their fleeces removed and have been playing in the sun this afternoon with the addition of a paddling pool just for fun.

120 Harper & Keele Vet Students will have visited us at The Vet Shed over the fortnight to learn a bit more about camelid husbandry and handling.
With the main emphasis on handling, the students have been very respectful to our precious alpacas and would like to thank them for that. Despite me wandering off track and trying to talk to 1st year vet students about camelid medicine, the highlight for most of them was having the chance to walk some boys and take selfies with the 9 month old babies 🦙😁

If I could will grass to grow, we would surely have the most grass in Cheshire.
However, I’m hopeful that our grass is only days away from bursting into life. Until then, it is still vital that we continue to supplement the feed to our alpacas, especially these pregnant girls.

Spring has actually beeen very kind to us. Having very little rain here for the last six weeks has allowed us to use the quad bike and paddock cleaner every day over the winter without making a muddy mess of the paddocks. 🤞🌞🌱

First day on the halter for Innocent and Isabelle, two of our eight babies still here from last summer. We will halter train all of our alpacas, not just so they will walk nicely on a lead but it makes them all gentle to handle going forwards.
We find that if we put the effort into the youngsters now, they never develop bad habits such as spitting or kicking.

We now have his first crop of beautiful babies on the ground and colour tested females pregnant to Satin available.

Due to our low altitude and definite lack of sunlight in the UK, our alpacas struggle to produce their own Vitamin D. To reduce the very real chance of a form of rickets developing, we like to boost their Vitamin D levels every couple of months throughout the autumn and winter period.
As alpacas have tight skin and thick fleeces, injecting under the skin needs a little more skill than in other species. All done for another 8 weeks.

You wouldn’t think they have the option to stand under cover!
More importantly, despite being weaned from their mums for over a month, this is the first time our beautiful fawn girl has put her head in the trough and tucked into her feed pellets.
