This week is Davey-Lee week!
Davey is a 9 year old Appendix American Quarter Horse who I will be spending the next 5 days with for a week of Intensive Training!
Davey was sold to Laura back in July as a green riding horse, with enough experience and training to class him as an uncomplicated project, yet comfortable and 'easy to do' with all aspects of general handling.
Now, when a horse is rehomed and changes environments, especially one they have always known, it can affect them in different ways; we don't always consider how much it can truly effect them. Sometimes they can present behaviours they would not do normally, however on Davey's arrival he exhibited some questionable behaviour that needed further clarification.
It came to light their was more than a few holes in the original storey; Davey had actually been gelded 4 years later than originally stated, had been kept paddocked with a stallion that has left deep scarring to the flanks, and given the initial viewing of Davey and his responses to certain exercises, had been 'trained' and handled using a common 'brand' of natural horsemanship.
This has left it's mark both emotionally and mentally, as well as manifesting physically, which Laura has been excellent in working through, from T-Touch to craniosacral therapy!
I have had two sessions with Davey to date, and whilst there is plenty their that needs attention to help Davey work towards become a confident leisure horse and agility prospect, I can see real potential in him; he just needs a little clarity and kindness.
This week is about consistently working to assess Davey's potential, to help him begin to create new and positive behavioural patterns and to help Laura to confidently choose her and Davey's way forward.
Here we are, both not looking to shabby for a wet and chaotic Sunday morning!
