Kahu Dog Training

Kahu Dog Training Kind, reward-based training to build trust, confidence and connection 🐾 Kahu is more than a name.

It represents the role we step into when we welcome a dog into our lives — not just as owners, but as guardians and protectors. At Kahu Dog Training, we believe caring for a dog is a sacred responsibility, woven with love, respect, and understanding. Every dog deserves to feel safe, heard, and supported, and every guardian deserves guidance that feels kind, achievable, and empowering. Our training

is:
🐾 Positive and reward-based
🐾 Force-free and ethical
🐾 Rooted in respect for the dog’s emotional wellbeing

We prioritise your dog’s feelings first, helping you build real-life skills through trust, communication, and clarity — not fear or force. The goal isn’t just “good behaviour”, but a strong, lasting bond where both you and your dog feel confident and connected. Training with Kahu is about learning together, having fun, and creating a relationship built on mutual respect — so life with your dog feels calmer, happier, and more fulfilling.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with their dogs is only focusing on stopping “bad” behaviours... instead of a actually teaching them what they DO want🐾

Dogs don’t automatically know our house rules, lead manners, or how to settle calmly in busy environments... these are all skills that need to be taught and practised consistently🐶

The more you reward the behaviours you like, such as calmness, focus, loose lead walking, choosing to check in with you... the more your dog will offer them naturally over time💛

Training isn’t about having a “perfect” dog.... it’s about building communication, trust, and habits that make everyday life easier for both of you🙌🏼

Small amounts of training done consistently will always beat one long session👏

As always, if you would like any training support, please feel free to message me and I will be happy to help 🫶🏼🥰

☀️ HEATWAVE = KEEP YOUR DOGS SAFE ☀️

With temperatures rising this bank holiday, it’s so important to be mindful of your dogs as heat can be extremely dangerous for them, especially puppies, senior dogs, flat-faced breeds and dogs with thick coats.

Heatstroke can happen much faster than many people realise, and even temperatures that feel manageable to us can be unsafe for them.

A few simple changes can make a huge difference✨

Skipping a walk on a hot day does NOT make you a bad owner. Keeping your dog safe always comes first 💛

I’ve put together this quick guide with some simple tips and signs to look out for during the heatwave. Feel free to save and share it with other dog owners 🐶

Stay safe everyone and enjoy your bank holiday🙌

One of the biggest mistakes owners make with their puppies and dogs is expecting calmness after excitement instead of teaching calmness before excitement 🐾

Many puppies struggle to settle because they spend large parts of the day in a heightened state of arousal without enough opportunities to decompress and switch off.

Training isn’t just about obedience... it’s also about helping dogs learn how to regulate themselves and make better decisions.

Calmness is a skill too 💭

Does this sound like your puppy/dog? Does your dog struggle to settle down in an evening when you want to watch tv and enjoy a brew in peace? Or do they struggle to regulate their emotions when visitors come into the house? Or maybe after a play session, they just can't switch off and know when the game is over and just want to keep going and going....

I can help you 🙌

Message me to have a 1:1 chat about your training struggles, I'm always happy to help😊

One of my favourite kinds of updates to receive 🤍

When owners first reach out, they’re often overwhelmed, embarrassed, stressed or constantly managing situations that feel exhausting.

Ozzy is such an excitable boy and used to struggle with knowing what to do with all of his big feelings, especially when guests came into the house. He would jump all over everyone, run around frantically and find it really difficult to regulate himself and settle down. He even used his bed more like a rag toy, pulling all of the stuffing out rather than actually relaxing in it 🤣

So hearing that Ozzy is now loving his bed, calmly relaxing around guests and choosing to settle himself instead of struggling to switch off is such a lovely reminder that progress doesn’t always have to look dramatic 🤍

Sometimes the biggest wins are:
• a calmer home
• less stress
• more confidence
• a dog finally able to relax

So proud of Ozzy and his owners for all the work they’ve put in 🐾

If you’re struggling with your dog’s behaviour right now, you are not alone and things can get better. Calmness doesn't always come naturally for some dogs and it is a skill that can be taught - and it can be life changing for both you and your dog.

Feel free to message me to chat about how I can support you 🤍

Kev the Cavapoo 😍🐶

I got to spend some time with this lovely pup recently 🐶💛 he's such a cool dog and his parents Adam & Lauren have done such an amazing job with him already 🥰

We worked on keeping things calm, building focus and engagement, rewarding the behaviours we do want such as auto check-ins while on walks (which Kev shows off beautifully in the photos 🤩).

These foundations are so important. It helps to teach Kev exactly what behaviours we like from him, and set him up for success, which is a step that's often missed out when people train loose lead walking.

Without these initial building blocks in place your loose lead walking will be an uphill battle from the start.
Training isn’t about forcing your dog… it’s about helping them understand. Building that connection and engagement out on walks is such an important first step in the process.

So many people think pulling on the lead is “just something dogs do” but with the right guidance, it really doesn’t have to be.

Training should feel good for both you and your dog, use your walkies as a time to strengthen your bond and enjoy each others company 🐾✨

If you want help making walks more enjoyable, feel free to message me 📩🩵

Let’s talk loose lead walking 🐾

Do you dread walkies? Is your dog pulling like a train?
Is your arm sore 5 minutes in? 😅

Believe me, you’re not alone and it's something I can help you with.
Wouldn't you love calm, relaxed walks where your dog is by your side and you’re both actually enjoying it?🙏🏼 I know it seems like a silly unrealistic dream right now, but just by following my simple plan, this can easily be your reality✨

Dogs don’t move like we do. They want to sniff, explore, and get to everything quickly and we're restricting them and slowing them down...its not natural for a dog to be on a lead so we have to teach them that pulling isn't necessary and that they will still get to enjoy all the things they want to do on a walk, at a more appropriate pace.

So instead of expecting strict “heel” work, what if we focused on something better…
✨ Connection over control

Loose lead walking starts with:
*Focus and engagement
* Rewarding the behaviours you want
*Clear, consistent communication

Making sure your dog is comfortable is a huge factor with loose lead walking:
A flat collar or Y-shaped harness with a double ended training lead is best in my opinion.
People think a harness encourages a dog to pull, but this isn't true at all.

Your dog will be more open to learning and enjoying their walk more if they are comfortable and using kind, reward based training - No yanking, no harsh corrections and no equipment that causes pain 🐶

Training isn’t a quick fix, it’s about building trust, breaking things down into small steps, and learning to move together as a team 🤎

If you’re struggling with your dog pulling on the lead, feel free to send me a message and I'll give you some of my top tips✨

Let’s talk loose lead walking🐾

Do you dread walkies?
Is your dog pulling like a train on every walk?
Is your arm sore 5 minutes in from being dragged down the road?

If you’ve ever walked a dog, chances are you’ve experienced something like this… and let’s be honest, its not pleasant.
It can feel embarrassing, frustrating, and makes walking your dog feel more like a chore than something to enjoy.

Wouldn’t you love to walk calmly through the park, with your dog by your side, both of you relaxed and enjoying your surroundings? 🌿

Well, I’m here to tell you - it’s absolutely possible… and I’m here to help you 🤎

It’s one of the biggest things clients ask for… and for good reason.

But let’s take a moment to think about our dogs 💭

They don’t move like we do.

You know that feeling when you're walking down the street and get stuck behind someone moving painfully slow… all you want to do is get around them so you can stride ahead?🤬

That’s often how it feels for your dog.

They want to get to all the smells. They want to enjoy being a dog.

Dogs naturally move faster than us two-legged humans, so instead of expecting strict, military-style “heel” work, what if we aimed for something better...
a true partnership where you're both in sync?

Loose lead walking isn’t about control. It’s about connection.

We start by building solid foundations:
☑️ Focus and engagement
☑️Rewarding the behaviours we want
☑️ Clear communication

Equipment also plays a big role. Your dog should feel comfortable on their walk - otherwise, they’re not going to enjoy it:
🐕‍🦺 Flat collars
🐕‍🦺‘Y’-shaped harnesses
🐕‍🦺Training leads (double-ended)

❌No corrections
❌No slip leads, choke chains, prong collars etc. that harm your dog
❌No yanking and hoping your dog will eventually understand…

You might hear people say harnesses are only for Huskies or that they encourage pulling… but that’s simply not true.
That’s like saying if I wear a tutu, I suddenly become a ballerina in Swan Lake 🩰🤣

A harness is about comfort and protecting your dog’s neck and joints. Every dog is an individual, so it’s about finding what they feel confident and comfortable in.

From there, it’s all about:
🤎 Building a bond
🤎 Creating trust
🤎 Playing and spending quality time together

When you work on loose lead walking, you have to break everything down into small, achievable steps. Build focus first, then gently add movement, introducing clear cues so you and your dog learn to move as a team.

There are no quick fixes with training - it’s not something you can rush. Learning to enjoy the process and spending quality time with your dog is what it’s all about… moving forward together, one step at a time 🐾

Message me if you would like some support with your dog pulling on the lead 🤎
