Let’s talk loose lead walking🐾
Do you dread walkies?
Is your dog pulling like a train on every walk?
Is your arm sore 5 minutes in from being dragged down the road?
If you’ve ever walked a dog, chances are you’ve experienced something like this… and let’s be honest, its not pleasant.
It can feel embarrassing, frustrating, and makes walking your dog feel more like a chore than something to enjoy.
Wouldn’t you love to walk calmly through the park, with your dog by your side, both of you relaxed and enjoying your surroundings? 🌿
Well, I’m here to tell you - it’s absolutely possible… and I’m here to help you 🤎
It’s one of the biggest things clients ask for… and for good reason.
But let’s take a moment to think about our dogs 💭
They don’t move like we do.
You know that feeling when you're walking down the street and get stuck behind someone moving painfully slow… all you want to do is get around them so you can stride ahead?🤬
That’s often how it feels for your dog.
They want to get to all the smells. They want to enjoy being a dog.
Dogs naturally move faster than us two-legged humans, so instead of expecting strict, military-style “heel” work, what if we aimed for something better...
a true partnership where you're both in sync?
Loose lead walking isn’t about control. It’s about connection.
We start by building solid foundations:
☑️ Focus and engagement
☑️Rewarding the behaviours we want
☑️ Clear communication
Equipment also plays a big role. Your dog should feel comfortable on their walk - otherwise, they’re not going to enjoy it:
🐕🦺 Flat collars
🐕🦺‘Y’-shaped harnesses
🐕🦺Training leads (double-ended)
❌No corrections
❌No slip leads, choke chains, prong collars etc. that harm your dog
❌No yanking and hoping your dog will eventually understand…
You might hear people say harnesses are only for Huskies or that they encourage pulling… but that’s simply not true.
That’s like saying if I wear a tutu, I suddenly become a ballerina in Swan Lake 🩰🤣
A harness is about comfort and protecting your dog’s neck and joints. Every dog is an individual, so it’s about finding what they feel confident and comfortable in.
From there, it’s all about:
🤎 Building a bond
🤎 Creating trust
🤎 Playing and spending quality time together
When you work on loose lead walking, you have to break everything down into small, achievable steps. Build focus first, then gently add movement, introducing clear cues so you and your dog learn to move as a team.
There are no quick fixes with training - it’s not something you can rush. Learning to enjoy the process and spending quality time with your dog is what it’s all about… moving forward together, one step at a time 🐾
