Ivy’s trip to Tenby 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Once upon a time we would have never even dreamed of these trips with Ivy, due to her reactivity at pretty much everything - dogs, people, cars, kids

We either would just rule these places out and go somewhere else, or Ivy would have been left at home. We hated both options.

Now, she’s just spent 2 days walking through busy streets past dogs and people, running around the beach (with more dogs and people), and chilling at our feet while we had coffee and lunch out.

And she didn’t just tolerate it. She was genuinely calm, relaxed and if she could speak, I’m pretty sure she’d say she bloody loved going on these adventure with us 😅

It can be incredibly hard to believe your dog’s reactivity is fixable. Even just to the point of walking past a dog on your morning walk without the drama.

Step 1, before training even starts, is this…

Then once we have a training foundation, we can start introducing the trigger again, ideally in a controlled way.

This is why I have specific controlled exposure sessions to start your dog in easier situations, before building things up to the real world.

These sessions are golden, but a friend’s calm dog is great too.

Then from here we can gradually train closer and with more excitable dogs, if this is your dog’s trigger.

With the right training this process is often much quicker than people expect, but building things from an easier point early days is crucial.

It gives your dog a chance to understand how to process these situations at a level which is fair, which in turn means we can truly address their feelings to the triggers, rather than just spending their life being stressed and you avoiding dogs.

Meeting more dogs is not the solution to reactivity.

Whether your dog is uncomfortable around other dogs or overexcited, doing this from day 1 will likely make their reactivity worse.

Yes we can build to re-socialisation, but there are steps to take to actually address how your dog handles the situations they react in first.

Collies, Shepherds and basically any dogs with strong drive needs to be playing if they’re reactive.

Structured play done properly is one of the best ways to indirectly address reactivity, but also just have a happier dog, which SHOULD BE the whole intention of dog training 😁
