As great as it sounds, positive ONLY dog training for reactivity often falls short

and too often it ends with you being told

“It’s just how your dog is”

“Their reactivity is untrainable”

“It’s just their breed”

“You need to just be careful and avoid other dogs”

“You dog needs to be on medication” 🤯

I’ve heard these too many times, and it’s just wrong.

I was told this for years with our Collie Ivy, and all it did was make us feel more stuck, upset and guilty.

Now she lives the dream life of any dog. Off-lead walks in the forest, cafes, pubs, trips away. You name it. And she was reactive as hell I promise you!

We used a lot of effective positive reinforcement to achieve this, but we also used fair, clear and consistent boundaries.

I think it’s safe to say she lives a much happier life as a result…

It should have been a nice weekend for you and your dog

but the reality with reactivity is that it’s almost impossible to enjoy these times.

Instead, you’re stuck dreading the very thing you were once looking forward to doing with your dog…

nice walks, exploring, getting out in nature, relaxing together.

No matter how careful we are, it always seems to happen.

I happened to be recording here, so hopefully this helps you next time it unfortunately happens.

This situation unfolded quickly and I could tell the other dog didn’t actually want to fight.

But usually if I see an out of control dog off lead I would avoid, even with Ivy being so well behaved.

The reality though is these situations will happen, no matter how careful we are. So having a very strong foundation of training with your dog allows them to deal with it and avoid things escalating.

Happy Birthday to the pup who started it all…

Little Ivy Wivy.

I think it would be fair to say, it’s been quite a journey 😅 for those who know, you know!

From the days of chasing cars, barking and lunging at pretty much everything, dreading our walks with her and the panic when we saw another dog…

To literally the perfect dog… totally unbiased…

Ivy came into my life through a slightly unusual set of circumstances (and definitely unplanned!), but I am incredibly grateful she did and I count myself unbelievably lucky to be able to have her in my life everyday.

If I’m totally honest though, it didn’t always feel like this. When she was super reactive and it felt like we were just struggling every single day, it was tough.

If your dog is reactive, maybe this is where you are now. But I promise it is fixable, and you can have that bond and life with your dog that you’ve always wanted, without the reactivity.

I’ll be sharing some exciting new bits that may help you later this week, and seeing as it’s Ivy’s birthday week we’re going to have to make it extra special!

What starts as a bit of lead pulling can quickly turn into full blown reactivity…

A more sneaky cause of reactivity, but over excitement can create some real big issues,

and when left unchecked can start to snowball into some rather spicy reactivity.
