World Oceans Day is a time to not only celebrate the wonders of the deep, but also to remind us of why we need to protect them.
Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface, produce over half of the world's oxygen, and provide food and livelihoods for millions. However, threats such as overfishing, plastic pollution, and climate change continue to harm marine environments.
World Oceans Day 2026 is an opportunity to raise awareness and inspire solutions to protect our blue planet.
Did you know?...
1. The ocean is home to the world’s biggest animal. The blue whale can grow as long as three school buses and weigh more than 400,000 pounds.
2. Most of the ocean is unexplored. Scientists estimate that more than 80% of the ocean has never been mapped or explored.
3. Oceans help make the air we breathe. Tiny plants called phytoplankton produce more than half of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. Without the ocean, we wouldn’t have enough air to breathe.
4. There are underwater waterfalls. In some parts of the ocean, cold water sinks below warmer water, creating giant underwater waterfalls that are even bigger than those on land.
5. The ocean glows at night. Some sea creatures, like jellyfish and certain plankton, can produce their own light in a process called bioluminescence. At night, the ocean can sparkle with glowing blue or green waves.
