Something new and exciting is coming soon to Tricks and Treats! I’ve just got this wonderful machine so I can start designing personalised items for you and your dog - from name tags to harness patches and so much more.

My question to you is: What would you like to see?

If you’re dreading your dog walks, get anxious when you know the postman’s going to come knocking, or are just exhausted feeling like you’re fighting with your dog all the time because they won’t listen or are pulling you along… then let’s have a chat.

Cause let’s be honest here, you’ve been dealing with this a while and your walks are starting to feel like a military operation where you’re scanning for threats, hoping your arm isn’t going to be pulled out the socket. And it shouldn’t be like that, for you or your dog.

Bribes aren’t working, not even the fancy chicken treats anymore and something has got to give. This is where I come in; I come out to you for a free in-home assessment and tailor a plan for the dog and the owner in front of me. I only do custom training plans, I don’t do generic packages or one-size-fits-all approaches. Every dog is different, set with their own traits and experiences of the world, so why wouldn’t the training be completely unique?

As a balanced dog trainer, I use positive reinforcement and rewards to build an unbeatable bond, but I also introduce clear, fair boundaries so your dog actually understands what "no" means. We tackle the root cause of the reactivity, build real impulse control, and teach your dog how to make better decisions on the lead.

I have 3 spots open in June for new dogs to train with me. This is your sign to DM me to see if we would be a good fit to work together.

You've got a perfect "sit" in the kitchen, but the moment you're out and about, your dog acts like they've never heard their own name. Here's 3 reasons your dog is ignoring you…

1. The "Distraction Jackpot": In your kitchen, you are the most interesting thing. At the park? A squirrel, a discarded chip wrapper, and a Golden Retriever 50 yards away are all way more exciting than a dry biscuit. You have to compete with the environment.

2. Lack of "Generalisation": Dogs don't struggle with a command itself; but they struggle with the difficulty of it in a new context. Think of it as the 3 D's:
• Distance – how far away from you can they still hold it?
• Duration – how long can they hold it?
• Distraction – can they hold it when something exciting is happening nearby?
You have to build each of these up slowly, in lots of different places, before they truly "know" the skill.

3. Jumping Too Far, Too Fast: The most common mistake is increasing the difficulty of training too quickly. Add 30 seconds, not 10 minutes. Move a couple of steps away, not across the room. Push too hard in any of the 3 D's and you're setting your dog up to fail. Build in baby steps and you'll be amazed at what they can do.

Pro Tip: Start in the house. Then the driveway. Then the pavement. Then a quiet corner of the park. Earn each environment before moving to the next — don't go straight to the field of distractions!

"He's Friendly!" are the two most stressful words you can hear on a dog walk.

You’re walking through your usual park, your dog is having a blast on his lead, snffing here and there when you see it…

A dog at full tilt, charging from 100 yards away. No owner in sight. Then, a faint shout from over the hill: "DON'T WORRY! HE'S FRIENDLY!"

This is a stressful situation and not just for you as the dog owner, but for your dog too, especially if you’re training them. But it’s all about being the advocate your dog needs. If a dog is ambushing you, you shouldn’t be waiting to see if they’re actually friendly.

How do you handle the "Friendly" ambush? Choose your style and let me know in the comments: 👇
1. The Body Blocker: You calmly but firmly step between the dogs. You are the shield.
2. The Voice of Command: A loud, deep "STOP" or "STAY" to the approaching dog. It works more often than you’d think!
3. The Treat Scatter: Throwing a handful of treats at the newcomer to buy yourself a 10-second exit window.
4. The Honest Shouter: "Please get your dog! We are training/ we need space!"

Which one are you? Or do you have a secret move #5? Let’s talk about it in the comments! 👇

Got a dog with a little more enthusiasm than etiquette? It happens, and it’s one of the areas that I help dogs with as part of my customised training.

One of my pack made great strides in brushing up on their manners in our sessions:

”Jessica is training our French bulldog that had no manners (owners fault!) but our little lady is coming on leaps and bounds already! I couldn’t recommend Jessica enough!”

If your dogs manners are a bit rough around the edges, DM me for a free assessment.

It can be hard to know which dog trainer will be best to help you and your dog, so I’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions around the process of hiring a dog trainer and why it should be me, ha!

All jokes aside, here’s the list:

Q: How does training work?
We start with an intake form to better understand your dog, your goals, and any challenges you're facing. After that, we schedule a free in-home assessment so we can observe your dog in their natural environment, which gives us both the chance to see if we’re the right fit to work together. If it’s a green light, we go ahead and set up the first session and a customised training plan.

Q: How much are training sessions?
Each session is £30 for 60 minutes.

Q: What happens during a training session?
The structure of each session depends on your dog’s needs, but the process is always hands-on. We’ll demonstrate the techniques, then coach you through practicing them with your dog. You’ll also receive a personalised training plan after each session to guide your practice between visits, because that’s when the magic happens.

Q: How long will my dog need training?
It depends on your goals; basic obedience usually takes just a few weeks, while behavioural issues like reactivity may take longer. We generally recommend weekly sessions for 3–4 weeks, after which we reassess the plan going forward together.

Q: Do you offer group classes or training packages?
We don’t offer group classes or pre-set packages. That’s because we believe training should be fully tailored to your dog’s unique needs and learning style. Some dogs pick things up in a day; others take more time — and that’s okay. We’ve priced our sessions to be accessible without needing a package.

Q: Why should I choose Tricks and Treats for training?
With over a decade of experience — including working with shelter and rescue dogs labeled "unadoptable" — we bring both heart and expertise. We're Level 3 certified in canine training and behaviour, canine first-aid certified, and committed to ongoing education. As a balanced trainer, we believe in using both rewards and fair corrections to guide behaviour. Plus there's the American accent we bring to the table that our clients love!
