I have to say I’m livid about the amount of fireworks I’ve heard already this year that have been going off at least since the beginning of the month. Last night Bothal primary had a display - a full 2 weeks before bonfire night - is this really necessary 🤷‍♀️. If we must celebrate terrorism can we at least do it on the actual day or the weekend closest to it and only organised displays 🧐.

Heartbreaking 😢

Lucy's dog, Betsy, had to be put down after she suffered a stroke due to the shock of hearing fireworks.

Guess who flushed her 1st pheasants today?

She was absolutely ecstatic 😂

This really put her recall to the test - we’ve never been in this situation before

She was bloody brilliant - how did we manage this?

*we train every day - even if it’s just recall/cue response maintenance,
*we’ve practiced around as many distractions as possible with increasing difficulty
*we’ve done a lot of impulse control exercises and she can respond even when she is in a high state of arousal

Interestingly, she wouldn’t take food as a reward because of her high state of arousal (she loves food usually). So, how did I reward her? By using the most powerful reward I had available - releasing her to go and chase more pheasants

When you have more control - they have more freedom

I think this is pretty shocking really, though largely unsurprising(to be fair, it’s only part of the picture where vaccines are concerned 😦). Most puppies now are vaccinated before leaving mom so most of us don’t get a choice. We are told not to take them out before vaccinating, which is massively detrimental to early socialisation - no wonder when their natural immunity is being neutralised, putting them at greater risk

Following a major outbreak of Salmonella schwarzengrund in the United States, a colossal study was undertaken by Behravesh et al. (2010) who found dry dog and cat food to be the cause of the outbreak. However, it took the two teams 3 years to establish the fact. In that time, 79 people over 21 states were poisoned with Salmonella schwarzengrund – half of them were children under 2 years of age. The issue was traced back to Mars pet food who ended up recalling over 23,000 tonnes.

Two years later, the CDC in the United States reported that 53 people from around the United States and Canada had contracted Salmonella infantis from dry dog food (or their dry-fed dogs) in 2012, 20 of whom were again children under two years of age. One in three of those ended up in hospital
