Windy and chilly today - Pablo (never the keenest of walkers๐Ÿ˜Š ) did not really appreciate his walk around the millpond ! His lovely windproof coat made it a bit more bearable for him and kept him nice and cosy. I love the Hurtta dog coat range for snuggly warm coats - it's a Finnish company so I guess they know a thing or two about keeping the cold out. โ„โ˜€

Here is the lovely Alfie ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ•having his laser treatment from Hana .

Laser therapy is a safe way to help with the pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis, muscle injuries, and many other conditions in our pets. It is usually used alongside other treatments, like anti-inflammatories, acupuncture and joint supplements.
How does Laser work ?
The laser emits specific wavelengths of light which interact with molecules within the cell to cause different biochemical effects. These include increased blood supply, reduced inflammation and increased tissue repair. Laser therapy also helps with pain relief by reducing inflammation; it is also thought to have additional pain relieving properties which are not completely understood.
We can also use targeted laser to stimulate acupuncture points for the occasional pet who does not like the fine acupuncture needles.

Does it hurt ?
Laser therapy is not painful - most pets relax and enjoy it as there is a mild warming sensation. Depending on the area treated sessions usually last 3-15 minutes. We ( and owners) have to wear special glasses and the pets have to wear their โ€˜dogglesโ€™ to protect our eye.

We use a Class 3b laser at 121 animal therapy, usually after the acupuncture treatment, for all animals that will benefit. This is included in the price of a consultation.

Raised food and water bowls can really help our older pets. Ground level bowls mean that our dog or cat puts extra weight through the front legs. This can make front leg problems like elbow or shoulder arthritis worse. Feeding from a slight height also means the spine is in a more comfortable position.

The ideal height for a raised food bowl is about at your pet's shoulder level. Try it at this height and check how comfortable your dog or cat is - you can adjust if necessary.

You can purchase raised feed bowls from many suppliers, but with Pablo I have just put them on a sturdy box at the right height.

Other feeding top tips include
- Your pet will feel more secure if they have a non slip surface to stand on whilst feeding, like carpet.
- Shallow food and water bowls mean that your pet does not have to bend their head too much to reach the bottom of the bowl

Summer is here ?! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿคž๐ŸŒž. Lovely to see the sun out this morning and even Pablo ( not always the most energetic of dogs๐Ÿ˜‚ ) enjoyed a run around the park. Think the sun cheers up our canine friends too, and the warm weather certainly eases any achy joints. Do post any pics of your pets enjoying the sunshine !

Happy Birthday Ty๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‚ ! Ty is 15 today - he has been coming to see me at 121 for well over a year now for acupuncture for his achy hips. Always with his friend Joya to keep an eye on things ๐Ÿ˜Š. He is the funniest dog and a star patient - he is very good but if we have not fed him a treat for more than a minute he likes to give a little woof to remind us ๐Ÿ˜‚.

So How Does Acupuncture Work ?

Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years โ€“ a 5000 year old human body discovered in an Austrian glacier had signs of a primitive form of acupuncture, and it is use is reported in Chinese medicine for over 3000 years.
There are 2 approaches - the Western approach, where points are chosen based on physiological principles, and the Chinese approach. Here practitioners believe that acupuncture points are connected by pathways along which energy (Qi) flows . Disrupting this energy is believed to cause disease, but using acupuncture can rebalance the Qi.
The most common condition acupuncture is used for in veterinary medicine is the treatment of chronic pain โ€“ for example due to osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal problems. Here acupuncture works by
- Increasing release of endorphins and adenosine โ€“ these are the bodyโ€™s natural painkillers
- Affecting the part of the brain that releases serotonin โ€“ the chemical responsible for mood.
- Blocking the pain impulses from travelling back to the brain โ€“ this is the โ€˜gate controlโ€™ theory of pain . This works in the same way as when we hurt ourselves and โ€˜rub it betterโ€™ โ€“ but for a more sustained period.
- Treating trigger points. These are the tense tight painful bands of muscle that form when you have discomfort somewhere and hold yourself differently. Using acupuncture directly onto these points can release them and relieve the pain they cause.

Acupuncture can also help with other issues โ€“ for example bladder problems like feline interstitial cystitis, gastrointestinal issues. Apart from the endorphin release and pain block mentioned above acupuncture is thought to help with these conditions by stabilising the autonomic nervous system. This system controls the things we are not in conscious control of โ€“ like digestion, heart rate, urine production and so on. Acupuncture is also used to speed wound healing โ€“ placing needles around a wound increases blood supply to the area as well as the endorphin effects and help with the treatment of some skin conditions.

I most often use acupuncture for painful conditions, especially arthritis, usually alongside conventional medication like painkillers where these and environmental modifications are not enough on their own, or do not seem to be working. Acupuncture can really help the dog or catโ€™s comfort and quality of life in many cases.

Lovely 'Chips' came in for acupuncture and laser therapy today. She is 13 - though you would never guess this - she looks and acts like a youngster. She loves agility and swimming and is a real sweetie. She enjoyed her during-treatment cuddles and treats from vet physio Hana today ๐Ÿฅฐ. Photo credit to Chips' mum Val.
