I got asked yesterday how you stop a Beagle following a scent.
Short answer..
You donโt.
A Beagle was bred to use its nose.
A Border Collie was bred to control movement.
A Terrier was bred to hunt and dig.
A Labrador was bred to carry things in its mouth.
A Husky was bred to run.
These behaviours arenโt flaws or signs your dog is being stubborn. They are genetically programmed into your dog.
The problem is people often choose a breed based on how it looks, then get frustrated when it starts acting like the breed it is.
Before getting a dog, do your research.
Not just the size, coat type, or how much exercise they need. Research what they were bred to do.
Because if you get a Beagle, expect them to follow scents and sniff every blade of grass on the field.
If you get a Collie, expect them to be obsessed with movement.
If you get a Terrier, expect them to dig, hunt and be very persistent.
If you get a Husky, you better have some stamina.
Training isnโt about fighting genetics. Itโs about understanding them, working with them, and giving your dog outlet for the behaviours theyโve been bred to perform to the best of your ability.
The more you understand why your dog does what it does, the easier training becomes.
