🎃🐾 Hooooowlaween 2025! 🐾🎃

Right then, spooky season’s upon us and the Old Dog New Tricks gang have gone full on Hooooowlaween! 👻🦇

I’ve had a bit of fun this week turning some of my lovely clients’ dogs into all sorts of ghouls, zombies and trick or treaters (no real dressing up required, promise 😅)

Not every dog loves being stuffed into a costume. So I’ve used a bit of AI magic instead. It’s a fab way to get the Halloween vibe without any of the stress or discomfort for the dogs 🎨✨

👇 Have a scroll and see if you can spot your own pooch among the spooky bunch!

Happy Hooooowlaween, folks! Stay safe, keep those treats dog friendly, and remember… if something goes bump in the night, it’s probably just your Labrador raiding the bin!! 👀🍪

🐾 Just a quick heads up!
I’m taking next Tuesday & Thursday (28th & 30th Oct) off for a well-earned brew and a few days out with my own dogs, so I won’t be taking any bookings those days.

Thanks so much to everyone keeping me busy, you’re all brill! 💚🐶☕

I recently had the pleasure of looking after Tommy over the weekend while his family were away. He’s a recently adopted Cypriot rescue, such a gentle, funny lad who’s really starting to find his paws in his new home. 🐾

Huge thanks to Sarah Edge Chartered Physiotherapist and ACPAT Physiotherapist, for trusting me with Tommy and her beautiful home. It’s always a privilege to care for someone’s dog, especially one who’s still settling in.

🌟 A Little Story with a Big Learning Point 🌟

This morning I was out with one of my elderly clients (who can be rather grumpy at times) when a very young puppy came bouncing over to us off lead. Now, no harm done, a quick handful of treats behind me, an about turn and off we went, but it did get me thinking.

These little encounters are more than “just a puppy being friendly.” They’re lessons.

👉 When puppies discover that all the good stuff happens away from their person, chasing dogs, running up to strangers, following scents, it sets the stage for recall struggles later on. Puppies learn quickly, and confidence without guidance can tip into habits that are harder to unpick down the line.

A few simple things can make all the difference:
• Use a well fitting harness and longline so your puppy has freedom to explore safely.
• Keep rewarding check ins and recall from day one.
• And most importantly, invest in lessons. Even if you’ve had dogs all your life, training methods evolve, breeds vary and no two dogs are ever the same.

Helping your puppy make the right associations early saves you and them a lot of stress and money later. Trust me, your future self (and your wallet) will thank you. 💡🐾 If you’re after a good starting point, the kind of lessons you’ll find at People and Dogs. Dog Training and Behaviour are just the ticket.

🐾 Welcome to Old Dog New Tricks Dog Walking & Pet Services 🐾

Here’s how I do things a little differently 👇

✨ Privacy first – Not every dog I walk appears here, because my socials are strictly opt-in. Some owners prefer to keep their dogs offline, and I fully respect that.

✨ Personal updates – Every client still gets their own notes, a route map, and a rundown of where we’ve been. Your dog’s adventures are always recorded and shared directly with you, not just Facebook.

✨ What you’ll see here – A mix of my own dogs (who love posing for the camera!) and a few of my lovely client dogs whose owners are happy for them to feature. You’ll also see training tips, enrichment ideas, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the care that goes into every walk.

So this page is really here to give you a feel for how I work: kind, caring, professional, and always force-free. 💛

🏊‍♀️ Swimming WITH Your Dog...... Who Knew?! 🐾

I never knew Spring Lakes Water Sports even existed, let alone that you can actually get in and swim with your dog there! Eve and I gave it a go yesterday and it was brilliant.

Why we loved it:
🛟 Dog life jackets for buoyancy and visibility (huge thanks to Mary at Tracks On Trails for lending us one 💕)
🚶‍♀️ Gentle entry and exit ramp
💧 Clean, tested water that’s safe for dogs and people
👩‍⚕️ Lifeguards on duty for peace of mind

And the best bit? Unlike rivers, there’s zero chance of a water company flushing a load of turds in 💩😂

Swimming together meant I could keep Eve safe, guide her to rest breaks, and make it a fun, positive experience.

💬 Would your dog be up for a dip?

Fun is great… but only if the dog’s having fun too. 🐶🐾

Two weekends ago, I had the big beautiful Patsy for her very first sit with me.
I had planned a whole day of fun with a field trip, games and enrichment.

But here’s the thing… as happy as she was to see me, her body language told me she was also a little perplexed. Where were her humans? Why was I here instead?

With years of experience reading dog body language, and some months ago completed the IMDT Canine Body Language course to sharpen my skills even further, I knew she needed a gentler day. So instead of pushing on with my original plan, I dialled it back. We spent the day together at her pace, following her usual routine as much as possible to help her feel safe. A snuffle mat, the Kong Wobbler, calm company and brain games when she was ready.

She had a lovely day, but more importantly, she felt safe and understood.
Enrichment is fantastic, but only when the dog is ready for it.
