Your puppy’s first groom is about so much more than just getting tidy. It’s their introduction to being handled, hearing new sounds, standing on the grooming table, and learning that grooming can be a calm and positive experience.

Taking things slowly during those early appointments helps build confidence and can make future grooming visits far less stressful for your puppy as they grow.

If you’re thinking about booking your puppy’s first groom, I’m always happy to answer any questions and help make the experience as relaxed as possible.

Which brush is which for each dog coat type? 👀

It can be confusing standing in the pet shop looking at rows of brushes that all claim to do the same thing… but using the right brush for your dog’s coat really does make a difference.

Slicker brushes are great for curly and longer coats as they help remove tangles and loose hair before matting starts.

Pin brushes work well for longer flowing coats and are gentler for regular maintenance brushing.

Rubber curry brushes are ideal for short-coated dogs and are brilliant during shedding season to lift loose hair.

Undercoat rakes can help remove trapped undercoat in double-coated breeds, but they should be used carefully and not excessively.

And one of the most important tools of all? A metal comb. If the comb can’t glide through the coat easily, there are still tangles hiding underneath.

Using the correct tools makes grooming more comfortable for your dog and far more effective for you.

If you’re not sure which brush is best for your dog’s coat type, send me a message and I’ll happily point you in the right direction.

Here’s 1 thing I get asked all the time…

“How often should my dog be groomed?”

And the honest answer is… it depends on their coat, lifestyle, and how comfortable you want them to feel between appointments.

Some dogs need regular brushing and grooming every 4–6 weeks to prevent matting and keep their skin healthy, while others can go a little longer with the right home maintenance.

Waiting until the coat becomes tangled or difficult to manage can make grooming more uncomfortable for your dog and often means shorter clips than owners were hoping for.

Regular grooming isn’t just about keeping your dog looking tidy — it helps with comfort, coat condition, skin health, and getting your dog used to being handled calmly and confidently.

If you’re unsure what grooming schedule is best for your dog, send me a message and I’ll be happy to help!

I know it’s lovely keeping that extra length during the colder months, but as the weather warms up, those coats can hide tangles that have built up over time. Trying to brush them out at home can be uncomfortable, and sometimes the kindest option is to take them shorter than planned.

Getting booked in sooner rather than later means I can assess the coat properly and keep your dog as comfortable as possible heading into the warmer weather.

Before you reach for another itch remedy, it’s worth looking at what’s happening on the surface.

Spring can be tough on dogs’ skin. Pollen, dust, and shedding coats can quickly build up, leaving dogs feeling uncomfortable and prone to scratching. Regular grooming isn’t just about keeping them looking tidy, it helps remove trapped allergens, loose hair, and debris that can irritate the skin.

I often see dogs become much more settled once their coat is properly maintained. A consistent grooming routine supports healthier skin, improves coat condition, and can reduce that constant urge to itch.

If your dog seems more uncomfortable this time of year, it might be time to review their grooming schedule.

Send me a message if you’d like to get your dog booked in or chat about a routine that suits them.
