Woodmancote Dog Training Club

Woodmancote Dog Training Club Woodmancote Dog Training Club exists to teach it's members and their dogs all the skills needed to live and have fun together.

We use positive reward methods in small, friendly classes Woodmancote Dog Trainign Club is a small, welcoming, friendly club. We want to support all owners to have the knowledge and skills to enable their dogs to be a wonderful addition to their family. Owning a dog can be an expensive addition to the family finances so we aim to make our classes affordable for all. We use reward based training in

all our classes. Puppies learn the basics needed for a happy time with their family. In addition to this, we talk about potential problems owners may come across, how to deal with difficult behaviours in their puppies and life in general with a dog. We recognise that owners may need support after the initial puppy stage, hopefully many will stay on for later classes but if not, we are always happy to advise our owners once they have left. We build on these skills with our classes for adolescent dogs. Should owners want to take their training further then we have more advanced classes after these. These have lots of variety in depending on the level the dog is working at. They may learn to ring a bell, do heel work, learn how to do a send-away, different tricks, the list of skills taught is long. Many members stay with the club for many years and then return with new puppies. We have 3 trainers, all with many years experience. All keep their knowledge current, updating their skills as things change in the dog training world. They have their own dogs and all have rescue dogs. Anita runs the Puppy and Adolescent classes, supported by Chloe. Chloe runs our 8pm class for young adults, those dogs that have moved on from the adolescent class. Anne runs another 8pm class for more advanced young adults and the "top class" for older experienced dogs. All 3 work as a team and are able to step into each others classes should the need arise. In addition, we have a "Sniffy Club" which is run at another venue and where dogs learn how to do scentwork. Many of our dogs go onto to do other dog activities, this may be scentwork, agility or mantrailing, to name but a few.

🐍 Adders 🐍

With the glorious weather recently, we have seen an expected increase in calls regarding adder bites.

The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK, and is also found across northern Europe. It is a protected species in the UK. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.

What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
❌Do not panic.
❌Do not interfere with the bite.
❌Do not apply a tourniquet.
❌Do not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
❌Do not kill the snake – it is a protected species.
❌If practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.

Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) – contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.

Veterinary professionals can call us any time on 02073 055 055 if required for assistance with managing cases of adder bites. We also hold a list of antivenom stockists across the UK. Please note that antivenom is not indicated in all cases.

A message from our Rural Crime Team.

With the longer days and nicer weather arriving, more of you will be out enjoying the Gloucestershire countryside.

Please remember that if you are walking your dog, it must be under control and on a lead when near livestock as sadly last week, a sheep was attacked and killed by a dog on Cleeve Hill.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact PC 1727 Jon Parker by emailing [email protected]

You may think that your dog is ok around other animals, but it is an offence to allow a dog to be at large near livestock.

There are also ground nesting birds on Cleeve Common, which are likely to be disturbed if your dog is running freely.

We have also been informed of an increase in the illegal use of off-road motorbikes on the hill.

Some are quite noisy, so you will probably hear them before you see them, but others are electric and you could be surprised by one riding near you.

So that everyone can enjoy the hill, we will be carrying out additional patrols.

If you see us out and about, give us a πŸ‘‹
