I started this business back in 2020 after spending the first part of the year in hiding due to being on the extremely vulnerable list after having a kidney transplant back in 2017. Someone was asking on the local page for a cat feeder and I decided to get insurance and offer. Since then, it has really taken off and I made the decision to run it full time. I had to have a kidney transplant after being born with only 1 fully functioning kidney, as I got older, the bad kidney causes the good one to fail. I knew from a very young age that I would need a kidney transplant and it was something I was terrified of. When I found out I needed the transplant, things moved very quickly and within 2 weeks of being told, I was in the hospital waiting to go to theatre. My first kidney was donated to me by my wonderful mum Valerie Faulkner and it lasted for 3.5 years. In June 2021, I found out that the kidney had stopped working and I would need another transplant. These things can happen and there is never a guarantee - I was lucky that it lasted for that time. I ended up spending 9 months on dialysis - going into the hospital 3x a week to have my blood cleaned by an incredible machine. It was a really rubbish time and when I wasn't in hospital, I was at home resting. I felt like I was really missing out on life, just when things were opening up and the world was getting moving again.

I was fortunate enough to have my second kidney transplant in March 2022. This time, it was slightly different as I did not have a direct match and instead went through the paired exchange scheme. This is a scheme that runs 4x a year across the country and it normally involves 4 people - 2 donors and 2 recipients. My amazing Auntie Andrea Revell was my donor however, I did not get her kidney, instead I got a stranger's kidney and Andrea's kidney went to another stranger. (It is all rather confusing but I have attached a diagram to explain it better!)

Since then, I have been so healthy and have managed to keep this kidney happy. Obviously things can change at any given time for no apparent reason but the doctors are all happy with how things are going so fingers crossed it stays that way.

Kidney disease affects approximately 7.2 million or over 10% of people in the UK with roughly 30,000 adults and children on dialysis. Dialysis is not a cure. A kidney transplant is not a cure. There is no cure for kidney disease.

To raise awareness of kidney disease and to help support funding, I will be doing the Kidney Research UK London Bridges Walk on Saturday 4th July along with Josh Hines, Eliza Faulkner, my mum, my Auntie Andrea and my cousin Annie Revell. If you would like to donate, we would be really grateful but completely understand that times are hard at the moment. Kidney Research UK is a really great charity and spends their donations on trying to find a cure for kidney disease. You can find more information on their website here: https://www.kidneyresearchuk.org/

Thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy post and I am sorry it is not our usual post. We really appreciate your support.

Hope everyone had a lovely sunny weekend! As you may know, we are due to have very high temperatures this week so we thought we would share some tips on how to keep your pets cool.

• Always make sure fresh drinking water is available. If you find your pet is not drinking enough you can always try adding some ice cubes to their water. Please do not give them ice directly as it can be dangerous.

• Licki mats are a great form of enrichment to keep your pets entertained especially if they do not go out for a walk. To make it even more exciting and to keep them cool, pop the licki mat in the freezer once you have added a tasty treat! Some ideas for licki mats include:
- Greek yoghurt
- Wet food
- Peanut butter (check the ingredients first, ideally nothing but peanuts)
- Mashed banana
- Sweet potato puree (we always buy the baby food pouches, they are 45p in Sainsbury's!)

• Paddling pool - obviously this is not applicable for all pets and may not be doable but most dogs love having a paddle. Make sure the water does not go green as this can be extremely dangerous! Make it more exciting by adding some dog safe fruit for them to grab. Almost like apple bobbing for dogs ☺️

• Keep rooms well ventilated! Do this by closing curtains but opening windows and have a fan going. you can also help keep your pets cool by using cooling mats. If you do not have a cooling mat, a damp towel works the same!

• Frozen treats! Frozen treats are a great form of enrichment for your pet. Some ideas include:

- Greek yoghurt and blueberries - make these by mixing together greek yoghurt and blueberries, popping the mixture in an ice cube tray and freeze. You can feed them to your pet as and when! Blueberries are a great treat as they are high in antioxidants and support their immune system. Greek yoghurt is full of live cultures which will really help with your pets digestive system.

- Banana, peanut butter (again check the ingredients as ideally just peanuts) and Greek yoghurt - same as above but add the peanut butter when mixing together! Bananas are great in moderation as they are full of fibre and high in potassium.

(Most fruits and veggies (except grapes, onions, garlic, leeks which are toxic) are good for your pet but please contact your vet if you have any concerns. This being the case, you can freeze most fruits and vegetables as a healthy but tasty snack for your dog. Please contact your vet if you are unsure)

- Tuna treats - these are great for your feline friends! Use a tin of tuna in spring water and simply spoon the contents into ice cube trays and freeze! Dogs will also go crazy for this delicious treat!

• If your pet lives outside (rabbits, tortoises, guinea pigs etc) then please ensure they have access to fresh water and plenty of shade also frozen bottles of water are great way for outdoor pets to stay cool and a form of enrichment, simply fill up and old water bottle and pop in the freezer. Once frozen pop in the garden for them. Remember, the sun moves meaning if somewhere was shady in the morning, it may not be shady by midday.

Lastly, please do not walk your dogs in the heat. We have shared an image below about walking your dogs. Heatstroke can be deadly! No dog has died from not going out for a walk, there are plenty of enrichment ideas online if you find you cannot walk your dog when it is cool, it is not always about the air temperature but also about the temperature of the path, if it is too hot for you to touch then there is a chance it could burn their paws.
Remember, if in doubt, don't go out.

Enjoy your week everyone! Please feel free to share this post with friends and family. If you have any other tips on how you keep your pets cool or ideas for tasty treats, please drop them in the comments below ⬇️

Amazing walk around Thrupp Circular in Oxfordshire. There are a lot of things to see on the walk including 3 churches, plenty of bridges and the old ruins of Hampton Gay Manor. You will have to walk along the canal side and you will also get the chance to have a cuppa and a cake in a lovely cafe called Annie's Tea Rooms.

As a dog walker/pet care business we recommend keeping dogs on leads as there's alot of fields you walk through with livestock roaming, although they are public footpaths we still recommend it.

If you are looking for a lovely place to walk with your pooches then this is a definite recommendation from us at Whiskers and Wags!
