🐕‍🦺 Last week, Jacqui visited a local rescue centre to conduct a behavioural consultation with Simba and the dedicated volunteers working with him.

✅ Simba has previously completed a two-week board and train programme here at Extremus, and it’s fantastic to see him continuing his progress with the team.

✔️ Ongoing training is essential- not just for Simba’s development, but to help all of his handlers build confidence and consistency in working with him.

Before beginning his training with us, Simba was often overstimulated and displayed reactive behaviours, particularly around other dogs.

✅ Our focus has been on developing his engagement and attention, which are key to his behavioural progress and future success in a forever home.

👊🏻 Great work to everyone involved in supporting Simba-he’s a truly wonderful dog with so much potential!

📧 If you’d like to learn more about behavioural consultations/ vet referral behavioural consultations, feel free to DM us or contact certified clinical behaviourist Jacqui Law at [email protected].

Manners, what manners!

Do you know what the MOST common cause of behavioural issues is with dogs in today's society?

No its not a lack of the dogs obedience or general trick training skills, neither is it a lack of physical or mental stimulation as many others would like you to think.

The answer is easier than you think and when you look through the bubble of the 'feel good only factor' it will be staring you straight in the face.

RESPECT.... or the lack of it in your relationship

What happened to prioritising your dog being polite, having good manners and being respectful to you, your family and the wider public and environment.

A lack of respect creates and instils a toxic relationship dynamic that promotes unhealthy states of mind and overt behaviour.

Your mysterious behaviour problems simply vanish, when the dog views your leadership with respect, politeness and good manners!

Time to get to work.

The Fear Bubble

So you own a nervous, anxious or fearful dog... Here is the thing; your human emotion tells you to comfort, reassure, wrap in cotton wool and do everything in your power to not add more stress or pressure to your dog, its life and world. You do this with your child when they are scared and low and behold it provides them a little confidence, so why would this not work with your dog?

You see, your dog does not think or act like a human. What you see as reassurance is actually reinforcement. When you are anxious because your dog is anxious, they do not understand that your anxiety is because of them. When you feel sorry for your dog and allow more freedom, flexibility and accommodation you provide them with less and less structure in their life - this leads to more fear and more anxiety, NOT less like your love thinks it does.

You can also achieve (which we are seeing more regularly now) a fearful dog who is hyper empowered. They are empowered because you provide them with so much freedom (you feel sorry for them, so overcompensate) yet they do not have the stability to make good, balanced decisions in the world. This leads to intense reactivity, overt instability and complex, problematic behaviour.

How do we deal with dogs like this. STRUCTURE, MANAGEMENT and EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP. Through this process, we take the weight of the world off the dogs shoulders and guide the dog into making better, healthier decisions based of our input and choice, rather than the dogs.

You want maximum freedom and enjoyment for you and your dog. Start taking back a little control and stop overcompensating for your dogs anxiety, you will only ever do LESS never MORE.

If you are struggling with a nervous or fearful dog, we are experts in providing guidance on how to get the best out of them so they can live a fulfilled and more stress free life. Contact us today for some expert advice and guidance;

Decisions, decisions.....

Question for you; you are out for a nice family walk with your toddler, you are super excited to take them to the local park (even though they have zero concept of what a park is yet) to see the ducks, play on the swings, enjoy the great weather. The perfect family time.

Would you then allow your toddler to run completely free, go and play in the road with traffic, run up to strange dogs and greet them, chase after the ducks, run over 100m meters away from you? No you would not, so why then do you allow this with your dog?

When you are with your toddler, you are managing them, guiding them and setting them up for success. Teaching them how to interact with their environment based on YOUR decisions as a mature adult, keeping them safe and learning about their environment through and under your supervision and guidance as their parent.

You see if you only took the same stand point with your dog on a daily basis you would be in a much more healthier, harmonious place than you are now. Being a teacher and parent does not mean you are cruel or unfair, it means that you actually have the dogs best interests at heart - helping them learn to become a stable, well balanced and well mannered member of society - no different than I hope you also do with your child.

Your dog needs structure, guidance and effective leadership as a 'parent' and if you can do it with your child, you can do it with your dog! - you only have to change your mindset.

For some of the best advice and guidance you will find on this mindset shift, contact us. Our tailored 121 Consultation and Assessment service is an in-depth overview on how to get the BEST out of you and your dog relationship.

What are you waiting for?

We have just returned from the The Friend Animal Foundation in Harare, Zimbabwe where we completed a week of offering expert training, development and management advice for the 500 dogs under the rescue's care.

As part of our work with Dogs4Wildlife our aim was to also assess a number of the rescue dogs to see if they had the potential to be developed as operational conservation dogs.

We worked with a range of puppies, adults and a number of dogs with severe behavioural issues, mainly from a history of trauma and abuse. The team at the Friend Animal Foundation are incredible and extremely dedicated to providing hope and love to dogs that have never experienced either.

We were honoured to have been able to offer our expertise and knowledge to such a fantastic team and look forward to a continued partnership where we help support the welfare, learning and development of the centres many dogs.

Please give the Friend Animal Foundation a follow to keep up to date with their vital work saving dogs across Zimbabwe. The Friend Animal Foundation

Social Expectations...

YOU and YOUR DOG are not on this planet to fulfil other peoples emotional needs. Read that again!

We live in a society of expectance. One where your dog specifically, bears the brunt of other peoples manic need to love, mollycoddle and give 'kisses'.

Imagine you are walking down the street with your child, would you allow random strangers to treat them the same as you do your dog?

Of course not! We expect and actively reinforce balance, understanding, appreciation and self control. So why then do you allow every random person who compliments your dog to spew forth a torrent of baby noises and overzealous physical contact without establishing both balance and boundaries.

Your dog WILL thank you for advocating for them and being more selective over who, when and how you allow people to greet them.

Be more selective. Dont worry about other peoples judgement, worry about your dog and what they are learning and coping with!

Start making your life with your dog on YOUR terms, not your dogs and certainly NOT other peoples and see the overall improvements you will gain through simple daily input, guidance and control.

'The Chaotic Walk'

You go out each day with your dog with one hope... To enjoy a simple walk with your dog. To provide them with fulfilment and to provide you with some exercise and the enjoyment of being in nature and of course spending quality time with your dog. What could be simpler........

However, if you readily allow all of the finer details leading up to your walk, to be; chaotic, pushy, ignorant, over -stimulated and dis-respectful (yes, disrespectful) then why on earth do you think that your walk would be anything different?!

What you bring to the front door and the build up of such, is going to be exactly what you get outside.

Each day work on the following, with your dog;

Self Control
Calmer state of mind
Better manners
More engagement
Being less demanding and expectant

If you prioritise walking like this over establishing a strong foundation based on the above points, then an enjoyable walk with your dog is going to stay a dream, never your reality.

Less pointless walks, more productive training.
