Support Your Dog’s Gut Health — Even Without a Microbiome Test

The Biome4Pets Microbiome Test Kit provides an in depth look into your dog’s gut health, helping identify imbalances.

Many microbiome support plans include personalised supplements such as PetBiome AMR to help encourage balance within the gut environment.

While microbiome testing provides valuable individual insights, some owners prefer to begin with a more straightforward approach to gut health. PetBiome AMR can be used as part of a general wellness approach to help support:

Digestive health
Immune function
Skin and coat condition
Recovery following antibiotics
Dysbiosis - Gut imbalance
Overall wellbeing
Behaviour

Because of the important role the microbiome plays in overall wellbeing, I also offer PetBiome AMR separately for owners who would like to proactively support their dog’s gut health without carrying out testing at this stage.

PetBiome AMR is a natural Science backed antimicrobial supplement. It acts against overgrowth using a combination of plant based anti-microbial bioactive polyphenols found in oregano, rosemary, thyme, berberine and a soil-based probiotic.

For pets experiencing ongoing issues, the microbiome test remains the best option for gaining a clearer understanding of what may be happening internally and creating a more targeted support plan.

If you would like more information about the Biome4Pets Microbiome Test or whether PetBiome AMR may be suitable for your dog, please get in touch.

As a canine nutritionist I always try to keep things as natural as possible during the weaning process.

One thing I personally prefer when introducing puppies to solid food is using whole goat milk powder to soften kibble rather than heavily formulated commercial puppy milk products.

That is not because commercial formulas are bad products, they absolutely have their place especially for orphaned or vulnerable neonates but for healthy puppies beginning weaning I always lean toward simpler ingredients.

Why🤔
Because whole goat milk powder is exactly that:100% goat milk
no added vegetable oils
no fillers
no synthetic fortification blends
no unnecessary extras

Just a simple, natural food ingredient.

Goat milk is also widely considered gentler on digestion and more bioavailable for puppies particularly during the sensitive weaning stage when their digestive systems are still developing.

For me the goal during weaning is to gently transition puppies onto quality solid food while keeping digestion as comfortable and uncomplicated as possible.

I like knowing precisely what I am putting into their bowls and I personally prefer a less is more approach wherever appropriate.

The puppies still receive complete nutrition from their balanced puppy food the goat milk simply helps make the transition more palatable and nurturing during these early stages.

✔️Simple ingredients.
✔️Gentle digestion.
✔️Natural support during weaning

Puppy nutrition isn’t just about growth it’s about building foundations for life.

What a puppy is fed in those early stages can influence their development, their immune system, their digestion and even their long-term health.

There is now growing research in this area. A large study from the University of Helsinki which followed over 4,000 dogs found that puppies who had at least around 20% fresh food included in their diet during a key early-life window (between 2–6 months) showed lower rates of allergy related skin conditions later in life.

Not a complete diet change just a meaningful proportion.

From a practical perspective even introducing some fresh, appropriately balanced food alongside a main diet may offer benefits when done correctly.

This may be linked to several factors, including supporting a healthier gut microbiome and reducing reliance on highly processed foods during a critical stage of development.

Fresh, carefully balanced diets whether gently cooked or raw can support better nutrient absorption and overall wellbeing.

But balance is absolutely key, especially for growing puppies. That’s why we take a science-led approach to ensure every diet is complete and balanced and appropriate and tailored to the individual puppy’s growth stage.

The choices made early on don’t just affect your puppy today they shape the dog they become.

Gut health plays a much bigger role in your dog’s overall wellbeing than many people realise.

It often starts with dysbiosis, an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the gut. When this balance is disrupted, harmful byproducts and toxins can be released, irritating the gut lining. Over time, this can lead to increased intestinal permeability, often referred to as leaky gut, where unwanted substances pass into the bloodstream.

The body responds with inflammation, triggering the immune system. This process also increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which are unstable molecules that cause oxidative stress and damage cells.

Here is where it becomes a cycle:Inflammation increases oxidative stress and oxidative stress further worsens inflammation all while continuing to damage the gut lining.

The good news is that you can help support your dog’s gut health naturally. A fresh food diet, combined with carefully selected functional ingredients like prebiotic fibres, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory rich foods can help nourish beneficial bacteria, support the gut lining and reduce oxidative stress.

By supporting gut health you are not just improving Microbiome health you may also help support your dog if they are dealing with an existing condition such as skin issues, allergies, joint discomfort, and other inflammation-related concerns.

Supporting gut health helps break this cycle and restores balance from the inside out.

Our hearts are full as we welcome Ebony’s beautiful Labrador puppies into the world 🐾🐾

As a small husband and wife team, everything we do is centred around care, time, and being truly present. With just the two of us, Ebony and her puppies are never without support we are here for them day and night.

Ebony is an absolutely wonderful mum. Watching her so gently and instinctively care for her puppies has been incredibly special she is completely devoted to them.

These early days are not easy. Lactation is one of the most demanding stages, both physically and emotionally and Ebony is giving everything to her puppies while still recovering herself. Our role is to support her, care for her, and make sure she has everything she needs.

Nutrition plays a vital part in this. As a canine nutritionist I will be preparing all of Ebony’s meals myself, carefully balancing her diet to support the demands of lactation. This includes enhanced levels of key nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids which are known to support early brain and eye development in puppies through the mother’s milk.

Our focus now is simply on raising these puppies with intention, care, and attention to every stage of their early development. We begin our socialisation journey tomorrow with Early Scent Introduction and Early Neurological Stimulation during these precious first 18 days of life.

We’re so proud of Ebony and everything she is given to her puppies and of the quiet understanding we share.
