Some very helpful tips from a fellow pet care business. 🐾👌🏻❄️
☃️Some snow advice for walking your dogs ☃️
Although it’s lovely to look at and may seem appealing to go walkies in, there are some issues can occur when walking your dogs in the snow.
So here’s some helpful tips to help keep them comfortable if you walk them:
🐾 wipe down your dogs paws after you’ve been out a walk, especially if you’ve been walking on pavements or areas that have been spread with grit & salt. As the chemicals can agitate their paws but also dogs will lick their paws so it can prevent them from ingesting any chemicals. You can also use boots or a paw balm to form a barrier against de-icing chemicals.
🐾 if you’re walking on tracks/off road areas, be mindful that you may not be able to see any bogs or deep ditches due to the snow so keep your dog close to you or on a leash.
🐾 if possible, try and time your walks during the day - later morning/early afternoon - when temperatures are due to be slightly warmer.
🐾 try and keep walks shorter than usual or carry out a number of short walks through the day if you can, to prevent frostbite occurring with your dogs especially shorter haired dogs.
🐾 your dog will indicate to you when they’re feeling the cold, by shivering or whining.
🐾 provide waterproof jackets if you like to help keep your dog warm when out walking, especially shorter haired breeds
🐾 if there’s a loch or an area of water frozen on your walking route, avoid letting your dog venturing out onto it, as you never know how thick the ice is and they could possibly fall through it.
🐾 if you’ve got to walk on a road side, consider wearing a hi-viz and even some LED lights, as visibility can be low when showers come on ❄️
☝🏻A wee tip of my own, if you have a dog who is prone to having snowballs develop in their coat, apply horse mane & tail spray before going out to put a protective barrier between the coat and the snow.
If you have any further tips or advice please feel free to comment or pop a picture of your pooches having fun in the snow. Mine go absolutely daft in it 😂
Stay safe out walking everyone ❤️
