Five sessions ago, Bob’s mum described our first walk together as a 0/10.
At the end of Bob’s latest Mutts Momentum session, she described it as a 7/10.
And honestly, that probably sums up Bob’s journey better than anything else.
This week we were able to move straight past our usual training field and work successfully in much more challenging real-world environments. Main roads, people, dogs, children, prams and all the everyday distractions that life throws at us.
Was it perfect? No.
Did Bob still have moments where he reverted back to older habits? Absolutely.
But that’s not what progress looks like.
Progress is being able to work through those moments together. Progress is seeing a dog and handler who understand each other more clearly than they did a few weeks ago. Progress is recognising that the foundations are starting to form and that the small wins are beginning to add up.
One of the biggest things I’ve enjoyed throughout Bob’s Mutts Momentum journey has been watching the confidence of his handlers grow alongside him. As their timing, communication and understanding have improved, Bob’s ability to make better choices has grown too.
Bob is a clever lad. The foundations are there. He is starting to understand the patterns and what is being asked of him.
Now it’s about consistency, repetition and continuing to build on those foundations so they become reliable habits.
A really enjoyable session and a reminder that progress isn’t about perfection. It’s about moving forwards.
Step by step, session by session, we’ll keep helping Bob put his best paw forward.
