Join us in congratulating Alisha on gaining her veterinary nursing qualifications πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ“β

Alisha joined the Windmill family in 2023 as a student veterinary nurse while she was completing her degree, and alongside help from her clinical coach Sarah Gardiner and the rest of the nursing team competed her training earlier this year.

Meet Petal πŸ’œ

Petal came in today for a dental procedure, and was a superstar patient all day ⭐

Dental procedures under general anaesthetic are important so we can see what is happening under the gum line, as it is hard to examine this while animals are awake. Petal had a couple of teeth extracted today, and had a descale and polish on the rest.

A descale and polish involves the removal of calculus/tartar and plaque from the crown and under the gum line. Ultrasonic tips which vibrate at 30,000 times a second are used to acheive this, then teeth are then polished smooth with a mechanical polisher. This helps slow down the reattachment of plaque. While the dog is under general anaesthetic we can reach the very back teeth, and every surface 🦷

We use dental radiographs to assess the tooth roots, to help us determine if and how we need to extract them. It can show us holes in the teeth, not visible to the naked eye and help us prevent future problems 🦷

Meet Rusty 🐹

Rusty came in to see us today and was a superstar patient ⭐

To weigh small animals, like hamsters, we can use a jug to keep them still on the scales to get an accurate weight.

Isn't he cute? Lovely to see you Rusty 🧑

Feeding Happy Rabbits 🐰

Daily πŸ₯¦
Aim to feed 5-6 greens a day.
Mix and Match to keep rabbits interested!
Remember the bulk of the diet should be hay/grass

Treats πŸ₯•
Limit to 1-2 tablespoons per day
You could grow herbs in a window box for an all year round supply!

Toxic 🚫
Some plants are toxic to rabbits, if you suspect your rabbit has eaten a toxic plant seek veterinary advice immediately πŸ“ž

Hay 🌾
85%-90% of a rabbits diet should be hay.
This is essential for wearing down teeth, ensuring a rabbits gut keeps moving and ensures good gut health and allows rabbits to exhibit natural behaviours

Nuggets πŸ₯£
Museli diets increase the risk of gut stasis, flystrike and reduce water intake, this can lead to an increase in urinary tract problems. The best dry food for rabbits is a complete nugget food.

We have had a deceased black and white entire male cat brought into us this morning, he has a black right hind leg, a black back, small black spots on his face and the rest of him is white, he is unfortunately not microchipped so we can't track down his owners 😒 He was found in North Marston by village gates near 30mph sign going out of the village on the back road. Please call the practice of you think he is you cat.
