Meet Petal π
Petal came in today for a dental procedure, and was a superstar patient all day β
Dental procedures under general anaesthetic are important so we can see what is happening under the gum line, as it is hard to examine this while animals are awake. Petal had a couple of teeth extracted today, and had a descale and polish on the rest.
A descale and polish involves the removal of calculus/tartar and plaque from the crown and under the gum line. Ultrasonic tips which vibrate at 30,000 times a second are used to acheive this, then teeth are then polished smooth with a mechanical polisher. This helps slow down the reattachment of plaque. While the dog is under general anaesthetic we can reach the very back teeth, and every surface π¦·
We use dental radiographs to assess the tooth roots, to help us determine if and how we need to extract them. It can show us holes in the teeth, not visible to the naked eye and help us prevent future problems π¦·
