Zeus 🌩️

Zeus the cuton de tulear comes to Maple Tails for management of his spinal pain. He was seen been a specialist who determined he had pain in his lumbar spinal muscles. In order to help manage his discomfort he’s been receiving weekly physiotherapy and hydrotherapy sessions.

Physiotherapy has been beneficial in reducing the tension through his spinal muscles while also helping him strengthen his core to reduce the strain on his spinal muscles. He also has been receiving hydrotherapy to help improve his strength.

He’s such a handsome boy ❤️

I talk to owners so often about the stress stairs cause on the body! Here’s a great illustration of why I always talk about avoiding them.

🚨 Stairs add A LOT of stress to the canine body!!

In this sketch, we can see a large-breed dog descending relatively low, wide steps, and we can clearly see

🔎 The front weight-bearing paw is splayed and flattened, the carpus has dropped, and the thoracic sling is collapsing into a deep “V” at the cervicothoracic junction. All of this shows us just how much force is being transmitted through the limb - and that the limb and thoracic sling isn’t strong enough to support it!

📉 The lumbar spine is kyphotic, the pelvis is flexed and rotated, and the dog is rotating through the spine to achieve the high degrees of limb flexion required for stair descent. These are classic compensation patterns - and they are not what we want to see. Yet, this is how many dogs navigate stairs every single day in their homes.

💡 Research backs this up.
Two key studies demonstrate how stair navigation dramatically changes musculoskeletal demands compared with ramps or slopes:

👉Carr et al., 2013, Exercises in canine physical rehabilitation: Range of motion of the forelimb during stair and ramp ascent. Journal of Small Animal Practice 54(8):409–413.

👉Millard et al., 2010, Kinematic analysis of the pelvic limbs of healthy dogs during stair and decline slope walking. American Journal of Veterinary Research 71(7):734–740.

These studies show that stairs require significantly greater joint flexion and ROM - and therefore greater muscular effort - than incline walking. That increased demand can overload the thoracic sling, carpal stabilisers, lumbar spine, and cervicothoracic junction, especially in dogs with existing pathology or insufficient strength.

👩‍⚕️ How we help as Vetrehabbers:
1. ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES:
🚪Restrict access to stairs for vulnerable dogs - especially large-breed puppies, those with elbow or hip dysplasia, cruciate disease, IVDD, spondylosis, or LS stenosis.
2. EXERCISE
💪 Incorporate targeted strengthening and conditioning before dogs navigate stairs.
🏋️‍♂️ Teach correct technique and posture to reduce compensations and repetitive micro-trauma.

🦴And if this much load is being placed on a large dog, imagine what a small dog experiences as they jump up and down each step. Supervision, strength, and control are not optional - they’re essential for preventing injury.

📆 At the Vet Rehab Summit on 8 November, experts like Anna Lee Sanders, Jana Gams, and Arielle Pechette Markley will dive deep into how we prepare our patients for these real-world challenges - using movement itself as medicine.

Graduation day for Frankie the sausage 🎉👩‍🎓

Congratulations to Frankie and her owner for doing so well with their rehabilitation. Frankie came to Maple Tails after being diagnosed with IVDD (intervertebral disc disease). Frankie was recommended conservative management which involved 4 weeks of strict rest followed by physiotherapy and hydrotherapy.

Frankie has exceeded everyone’s expectations and within 6 weeks of starting rehab she is back to living her best life (although slightly modified!). She’s stronger than ever and ready to go on nice long walks with her owner again. Way to go Frankie 🎉

The amazing Benji 🇪🇸

Benji is just an 11 month old puppy who fractured his spine at 4 months old falling from a balcony in Spain. This accident has left him completely paralysed in his back legs. His previous owners surrendered him to a rescue and now he’s come to his wonderful home here in England!

Since Benji’s arrival in the UK his owners have been committed to trying to see if Benji can regain the use of his back legs! Through hydrotherapy and physiotherapy Benji has started to make some excellent progress and now is able get some movement in his legs unaided and wag his tail! Just a month ago Benji had no muscle mass or movement in his hind legs.

Stay tuned for further updates on the little super star!

Meet Harry ✨

Harry has been coming to Maple Tails for physio to help recover from his vertebral stablisation and left sided hemilaminectomy. He’s done so well and in just 4 months he’s now back to 3 hour long walks and never shows any signs of getting tired 🙈

Way to go Harry! This wouldn’t have been possible without the commitment from his owners during his rehabilitation. They’ve all done so well!

🐾 Why It’s Important to Keep Your Dog’s Muscles Warm After Hydrotherapy 🐾

Hydrotherapy is a fantastic way to support your dog’s recovery, mobility, and overall muscle health. But did you know what happens after the session is just as important?

When a dog comes out of the warm water, their muscles are relaxed, loose, and more flexible. If they cool down too quickly, those muscles can tighten up, reducing the benefits of the session and sometimes causing stiffness or discomfort.

✨ Keeping your dog warm after hydrotherapy helps:

Maintain blood flow to recovering muscles 💪

Prevent stiffness and soreness ❄️

Extend the positive effects of the therapy 🐶

Support long-term mobility and comfort 🧡

A cozy towel dry, a warm coat, a drying coat, or even some gentle movement indoors can make all the difference.

Your pup worked hard in the water—let’s help those muscles stay happy and healthy afterwards too! 🐕💦

Happy birthday Ori 🎉

This sweet boy just turned 8 years old! He loves coming for his monthly hydrotherapy sessions to help him manage his arthritis and to help keep his hind end strong

Here’s to many more years of Ori cuddles and cheekiness 🥰

Ps. If anyone was wondering why the chair felt a bit damp yesterday, this little cutie is to blame. I couldn’t say no when he asked to hop up for a picture 😂

Leo 🦁

Leo has just recently started coming to Maple Tails for laser therapy. Leo unfortunately had a cat bite which turned into a large abscess. The wound was so large the muscles in his shoulder were exposed! In order to control him he’s been having to stay indoors and wear his kitty cone, but the initial healing has been slow. His owners were keen to get him back to normal cat activities as soon as possibly so he’s been receiving laser therapy 3x weekly to help the wound close.

After just 1 week of laser the wound is nearly half the size when he started coming for treatment. Hopefully it won’t be long until Leo can go back to being an indoor/outdoor kitty again 🥰

Barney the cutest cowboy in the west 🤠🐮

Barney has been coming to Maple Tails for laser therapy to help with closing a wound after the removal of a large lump from his shoulder. He received a regular course of laser therapy to help the large wound heal.

I have some wonderful pictures of the progress, but I’ll save you guys the gore (for now!) and just show you how sweet his face is!

Stay tuned for a full case study on how laser therapy helped Barney recover from surgery ❤️
