Grass seeds 🌱

Those pesky grass seeds are still out and about and causing trouble for our furry friends as per usual! ⚠️

These barbed seeds can easily attach to fur, burrow into ears and even burrow under the skin, particularly in between toes 🐾

Signs to keep an eye out for 👇

👂Ears: Head shaking, scratching, and discomfort may indicate a seed lodged in
the ear. These don’t work their way out and may need removal under sedation
or anaesthetic.

👀Eyes: Redness, weeping, pawing, or squinting can signal a seed under the
eyelid. Prompt vet attention is needed to prevent damage.

🐾Feet: Lameness, licking, swelling, or oozing between toes could mean a seed
has pierced the skin. These can travel up the leg and may cause infections.

Prevention tips 👇

🔸Trim coats, especially around feet, ears, and between toes - particularly important for breeds like spaniels.

🔸After walks, check your dog thoroughly and remove any visible seeds.

🔸Avoid areas with long grass during summer.

…and another heatwave! 🔥

A yellow heat health alert has been issued for as temperatures are set to surpass 30°C into next week 🌡️ ⚠️

As always, be very mindful of the heat when considering taking your dog for a walk. Only take them out very early in the morning or late at night when temperatures are low 🐾💧

If in doubt, skip that walk! 🚷

🔸Key tips to help prevent your pet getting heatstroke:

🐾 Make sure your pet has access to clean water at all times, and carry water with you when walking your dog

🐾 Animals can get sunburnt, particularly pale-coloured ones with areas with sparse fur. Ideally keep them inside or in the shade, but if they are in the sun use a suncream suitable for pets

🐶 Dogs’ paw pads can burn on hot pavements. If it’s too hot for your hand it’s too hot for their paws

🐶 During heatwaves, restrict walks to early morning only. On very hot days the temperature is still too hot for dogs in the evening

🐶 Remember it is OK not to walk your dog at all during very hot weather – it's far better to be safe than take unnecessary risks

🐱 Encouraging cats to drink water may require you placing a bowl in a few places around the house or in the garden

🐱 Be careful your cat doesn’t get shut into hot rooms or sheds with no ventilation

🐱 Make some ice lollies for your cat with some of their favourite treats (e.g. tuna brine)

🔸Signs of heatstroke: 🥵

- Excessive panting
- Dribbling
- Increased heart rate
- Red gums and tongue
- Vomiting and diarrhoea
- Lethargy
- Confusion
- Collapse
- Seizures

If you suspect that your pet might have heatstroke, move them to a cool area (as long as it is safe to do so) and contact your vet immediately.

🔸Which animals are more susceptible to heatstroke? 🐾

- Animals that are overweight

- Flat faced breeds such as Pugs and French Bulldogs, or Persian cats

- Pets with thick coats

- Old or very young animals

- Animals with pre-existing conditions, particularly airway, lung or heart problems

It’s Rabbit Awareness Week! 🥰🐰

Keep an eye out for posts from Rabbit Awareness Week throughout the week for advice on all things rabbit 😊🐰

It's Day 1 of Rabbit Awareness Week: Happy Hoppy Homes! 🏠🐰

Your bunnies deserve space to thrive! According to RSPCA guidelines, rabbits need housing where they can hop, run, jump, dig and stretch out fully when lying down. They need enough room to exercise and stand up fully on their back legs without their ears touching the roof. A proper setup includes separate areas for feeding, resting, and exercise.

Take the first step toward better bunny housing - download our free 'Happy Hoppy Homes' pack from our website today!

🚨 Dogs & Hot Cars: A Deadly Combination 🚨

On a warm day, the inside of a parked car can turn into a scorching oven in just minutes, even with the windows cracked! 🌡️🔥

“Not long” is TOO LONG. If you can’t bring your furry friend inside with you, PLEASE leave them safely at home.

🐾 Heavy panting
🐾 Excessive drooling
🐾 Rapid heartbeat
🐾 Bright red gums or tongue
🐾 Weakness, confusion, or collapse

If you ever see a dog trapped in a hot car, don’t wait. Call 999 immediately and then seek veterinary help ASAP.

Let’s keep our pets safe and cool this summer! Share this to spread awareness 💙🐶

Grass seeds 🌱❗

🔸 Grass seeds are small, pointy seeds attached to long grass stems and they can cause problems to dogs if they end up in their fur during walks 🐾

🔸 Unfortunately grass seeds have very sharp ends, so they can burrow down and pierce the skin.

Here are some very useful tips on how to deal with grass seeds from Blue Cross👇
