Meet Flint 🐾🔥

Flint is one of our amazing flyball dogs who comes to see us for fitness and conditioning to help keep him strong, balanced, and competition ready 💪🐶

For dogs competing in high-impact sports like flyball, conditioning work is so important. Sessions are designed to help improve muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, body awareness, and overall performance — while also aiming to reduce the risk of injury from the repetitive strain that can come with such a fast-paced sport.

Using the underwater treadmill allows Flint to work hard while reducing impact on the joints, making it an excellent way to safely build strength and stamina alongside his training schedule 🏃‍♂️💦

He always gives 100% in his sessions and is an absolute pleasure to work with. We love watching him progress and can’t wait to see him continue smashing it in competition 🐾🏆

🐾 Nail Length & Its Impact on Canine Biomechanics

Have you checked your dog’s nails recently?

Long nails do more than just click on the floor—they can significantly influence your dog’s posture, movement, and overall musculoskeletal health.

When nails are left untrimmed, they don’t just affect the paw—they can impact the entire kinetic chain.

Why Nail Length Matters

🟢 Alters Joint Angulation & Posture

Overgrown nails force the toe pads upward and backward (caudally), shifting weight proximally within the limb.

This disrupts normal limb loading and can lead to:

* Postural adaptations
* Altered joint alignment
* Compensatory movement patterns

📖 Reference: Zink & Van D**e (2013), Canine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation

🟢 Impacts Gait & Reduces Stability

If nails contact the ground during stance, they can:

* Cause toe splaying
* Reduce effective ground contact
* Compromise traction

This may increase the risk of:

* Slipping
* Soft tissue strain (tendons/ligaments)
* Secondary compensatory issues

📖 References: Touch Animal Rehabilitation (2020); Canine Body Balance (2021)

🟢 Increases Musculoskeletal Load

Chronic postural change can contribute to:

* Myofascial tension
* Uneven joint loading
* Increased risk of conditions like Osteoarthritis in dogs

Particularly relevant in:

* Senior dogs
* Sporting/working dogs
* Orthopaedic cases

📖 Reference: Veterinary Clinics of North America (2020)

✅ Quick Nail Check

Ask yourself:

✔️ Do the nails touch the ground when your dog is standing?
✔️ Can you hear them tapping on hard flooring?

If yes—it’s time for a trim.

🟢 Clinical Insight

Nail length is often overlooked, yet it’s one of the simplest modifiable factors affecting biomechanics.

In practice, I frequently see improvements in:

* Postural alignment
* Limb loading symmetry
* Movement quality

…simply by addressing nail length alongside soft tissue work.

🟢 When to Seek Help

If your dog:

* Is reluctant to walk on certain surfaces
* Slips frequently
* Shows subtle gait changes
* Dislikes nail trimming

Support from a qualified professional (groomer, vet, or therapist) can make a significant difference.

✨Milo ✨

We are so proud of the progress Milo has made during his rehabilitation journey with us 💙

Milo was referred to us with hindlimb weakness and proprioceptive deficits, which were impacting his strength, coordination, and overall mobility. From his very first session, he has approached every one of them with such enthusiasm and never fails to put a massive smile on our faces — it’s been amazing to watch his confidence grow week by week.

Through a tailored programme, we’ve been able to safely support his weight, encourage correct movement patterns, and gradually rebuild strength and stability. His coordination has improved beautifully, and he is becoming much more aware of his limb placement — a huge milestone for dogs with proprioceptive challenges.

Milo continues to go from strength to strength, and we couldn’t be prouder of how far he has come. His dedication, alongside his amazing owner is truly paying off.

Well done Milo — you’re doing incredible 🐾💙

Sadie’s Journey 🐾

Sadie was referred to for the management of osteoarthritis and associated muscle atrophy. These conditions had begun to impact her mobility, comfort, and overall quality of life, making a tailored rehabilitation programme essential to support her recovery and long-term wellbeing.

Following a thorough assessment and veterinary referral, Sadie commenced a structured treatment plan designed to improve strength, enhance joint mobility, and alleviate discomfort. Her programme incorporated controlled underwater treadmill hydrotherapy, enabling low-impact exercise while promoting muscle development and reducing stress on her joints.

Throughout her sessions, Sadie demonstrated excellent progress. Gradually, she showed improved muscle tone, increased stamina, and greater confidence in her movement. The buoyancy and resistance of the water provided the ideal environment to rebuild strength safely while supporting her arthritic joints.

Thanks to her determination, combined with the collaborative support of her dedicated owner and referring veterinary team. Sadie has made wonderful strides in her rehabilitation. Her journey highlights the effectiveness of a personalised, multidisciplinary approach to managing osteoarthritis and restoring functional mobility.

We are incredibly proud of Sadie’s achievements and look forward to supporting her continued comfort, strength, and quality of life.

We think Bruce has made himself at home… 💙🐾

After being the best big brother and supporting his sister Poppy during her session, Bruce decided he quite liked it here… 👀

So much so, he sneaked into the treadmill and refused to come out when it was time to go home! 😂
