When you live 6 minutes drive from the sea it’s a daily must.

Today Saunton beach looked like an artist had painted the reflection of the sky on the sand. The wind with its feisty presence creating a watercolor painting showing just how fierce yet beautiful it can be. Allowing Maggie and Olive to run in the clouds 💞🐾

Someone says ‘health tested’…..But what tests exactly should you be asking about?

Each breed of dog has specific health tests that are relevant to their breed and genetics and hereditary conditions. These are the tests our Retrievers require.

🐾DNA
Arguably, one of the most important tests to provide a wealth of information on health risks, breed identification, physical and behavioural traits.
🐾Hip and Elbow Score
X-rays are used to provide a numerical value that indicates the health of your dog’s hip and elbow joints.
🐾BVA eye test
Designed to detect hereditary eye diseases ensuring the health of breeding dogs and their offspring.
🐾BVA Gonioscopy eye test
A specific eye exam to detect glaucoma or the predisposition to develop it.
🐾ICT
An inherited skin condition resulting in the outer layer not developing properly leading to rough flaking skin. Usually included in DNA but needs to be confirmed.

There’s a huge amount of work that goes into achieving a dog breeding licence. It’s the first thing I would check if I ever had to buy a dog again.

Knowing someone has a licence means that they’ve put in a massive amount of work behind the scenes to look after the dogs environment, welfare, health, emotional well-being, enrichment and many other factors that ensure you get the healthiest happiest puppy possible.

One of Olive’s adorable little traits…She doesn’t like to fall asleep unless she’s in contact with someone, in this case, Maggies leg. It only has to the smallest of connections, but as long as part of her is in contact with you, she’s at her happiest. 💞🐾

Higher standards in the little things 🐾

Toys and bedding are rotated daily here — not just to keep everything clean, but to keep enrichment fresh and engaging for the dogs.

New toys = new interest, less boredom, and happier, more stimulated dogs.

Clean, rotated bedding = an important part of maintaining biosecurity and overall health.

And of course… daily “dino surgery” is sometimes required 🦖🪡

It might look like a washing line full of chaos, but it’s all part of raising happy, healthy, well-adjusted dogs — the way it should be.

Preventative care is all about staying one step ahead of potential health issues, rather than waiting until something goes wrong.

It focuses on regular monitoring, early detection, and consistent routines that support a dog’s long-term health and wellbeing.

So what does that actually look like in practice?

✔️ Regular weight checks and body condition scoring
✔️ Monitoring appetite, behaviour, and energy levels
✔️ Routine vet health checks
✔️ Keeping on top of parasite treatments and vaccinations
✔️ Maintaining clean environments, bedding, and equipment
✔️ Providing appropriate enrichment and exercise

These small, consistent actions help spot subtle changes early — often before they become bigger problems.

Why is this important?

Because dogs can’t tell us when something feels “off.”
Preventative care allows us to notice the signs they can’t explain.

It supports:
• Better long-term health
• Reduced risk of illness
• Early intervention when needed
• Overall wellbeing and quality of life

It’s not about doing something extra —
it’s about doing the right things, consistently.
