Here I am on our morning field run with a correction. For me, there is aways a relevant and immediate consequence: toy removed, lead back on, back in the kitchen if you woof at the Amazon driver etc.

Coco is obsessed with balls and can find one at a 1000 paces and it can be totally disruptive to the pack and to what I’m trying to achieve from this part of the day.

Everyone has a different view of dog training or behaviour management. For me, a rule has to be there for a reason (I hate most rules and and certainly silly ones) and you must be consistent in your enforcement of it. Or else there is mayhem and we get behavioural ‘creep’. I never give in.

As chief cocker spaniel, my job is to ensure this walk reflects what show cockers are bred to do otherwise I will have unhappy dogs - ball play is a later session in the day. And here I am warts and all doing it. Mungo hates balls and mayhem so he’s totally with the programme. The rest would happily get wired 😆. You need to plan a ‘dog time session’ for what you’re trying to actually achieve.

I am a very relaxed dog owner but I believe corrections should be immediate and relevant and leadership requires firm and consistent enforcement and fairness.

And another gorgoeus Ludo Dudo: Ruby.
What a beautiful golden litter.

Actually, I was away in Milan when this date occurred watching Olivia Dean with my daughter Hattie.

So I left James in charge - and he’s taking all the credit on behalf of Ludo 🤩.

➡️ AON Carrier Info

Information already well known by some of us but might be worth a read if you didn’t register with me or haven’t got a Mungo’s or Ludo puppy.

Very few show cocker studs are tested for AON because it was quite a tricky test to get done from the USA (but not beyond the wit of man). And statistically she is wrong: this stud produced 19 KC reg litters and if any of the dams were carriers then two carriers in theory will produce 1 clear, 2 carriers and one affected. And she is one of the affected.
Two carriers won’t in theory affect the whole litter. Just some of them.

Of the 19 litters, 3 of the dams were tested clear of AON. Rest of the dams not tested. And that’s very usual.

There’s a few studs being used currently who are AON carriers 🫣 and ones hopes those breeders who only use clear tested dams.

➡️ Info for registered folk

Have written a small piece on show spaniels and resource guarding based on my own experiences with RG dogs.

This pieces deals what guarding is about and why it’s not to be tolerated and simple steps you can do day 1 of having a puppy to stop it happening.
Prevention must be intentional from the get go and MUCH easier than addressing it when you have a dog with it.

That said, if you haven’t got an optimum set-up, probably not a lot you can do to stop it.

DM me if you want it.

Post the recent debacle, I’ve had a few 🫣 upsetting messages this week and I’m sure a few others are in the same boat.

I don’t recommend any breeders as such - although I can tell you what I know of them through reputation, personal dealings, accreditations, licence status, their dogs and their stud dogs. It’s a small world, we all know one another, and I very much value the professional relationships I have with many of them as I often need a favour 🥰

What I’ve learned over time is to only put significant weight on a personal recommendation from one of two types of people:

1. Your very best friend — someone who knows you, whose judgement you genuinely trust, and who you can go back to if their recommendation turns out to be rubbish 😂
2. Someone sufficiently knowledgeable and qualified in their regulated field that you can independently establish they actually know what they’re talking about.

Neither really applies when it comes to someone recommending a breeder.

What puppy buyers actually need is enough knowledge to make their own in person, up close evaluation of a breeder: their dogs, health testing, breeding decisions and setup and not simply being told (by me or anyone else) where to buy a puppy, or looking at FB posts 🙄.

Ignorance is bliss, puppies are cute, and breeders aren’t always truthful. There is a very limited amount I - or any other breeder or stud handler or any organisation like the council, can do once you’ve bought the puppy or put down a non-refundable deposit.

Choosing Insurance

Why the decisions you make from the very beginning can either save you money, or cost you money later on. What you want to look for from an insurer and how to make it cost effective.

Choosing a Vet

What makes a show cocker cuddly and others, not so much?
I think it’s to do with a number of things but primarily testosterone (applies to males or females) and where the dog is on a scale of dominance (old school I know).
Some are very independent and in need of more assertive leadership.
Others are very cuddly and could be prone to anxiety and therefore need a much softer touch.
It’s hard to work out what you have til they are a bit older and you have to respect the type of dog you have so the same approach for all simply won’t cut it. It is tempting to want to make them the dog that’s your ideal or suited to your set up but doesn’t work like that.
But they are dogs with their own thoughts and needs.
Ludo Bug here loves a cuddle - but many dogs don’t, and you need to resect their space. Mungo would only like me doing this cuddle. And I’m not sure he’d be THAT keen.
You can’t make them something they are not, and whilst you may not be able to start getting an idea til 7 weeks plus, an experienced breeder will give you an idea of the dog you’re getting - and how you should approach them.

Do you have a preference? I like the more independent types - as I am a bit like that myself 😃 but I do believe: you get the dog you’re meant to and they teach your great things - if you’re willing to learn.
