**DEFRA announced in April 2013 that by 6th April 2016 every dog owner in England must have their pet Microchipped, this has given owners a three year time frame to get their pets Microchipped.**
The Government have brought in this new law to try to help reunite owners with their lost or stolen pets and to reduce the amount of dogs in Animal Shelters. If dogs that are found to be without Microchips after the 6th April 2016 the owner could face a fine of upto £500 and be ordered to have the dog microchipped.
Local Authorities provide the following figures for April 11- March 2012 :- 118,932 Strays, 55,898 were returned to the owners, of which only 7,098 were microchipped. 6,900 were put to sleep of which only 1,924 had behavioural problems.
