The Mirkwood Rest Home for Retired Sheep

The Mirkwood Rest Home for Retired Sheep Vegan sanctuary where we take in aged sheep and allow them to live out their lives in peace and comfort.

There is far too much animal cruelty in the world, we offer an oasis of kindness. 🐑

This gorgeous and incredibly solid young man is Noel. 🐑 He and his mate Nigel don't actually belong to me, they came here four years ago to be sheared and somehow never went back! 😂 Their Mum is still looking for somewhere to keep them but until such time I will continue to love them to the ends of the earth. 🐑❤️

Our great big beautiful baby Basil decided he wanted a cuddle tonight... Jack wasn't far away! ❤️🐑

The boys and girls here absolutely love their apples and so we are totally indebted to Gemma and Tesco in Boston for once again letting us have their excess apples, I can't tell you how happy this makes them and me, I swear you can see the smiles on their faces when you walk in the field with the buckets of apples! 🍎🍏🐑

It's hard work this sheeping lark, we have to go for a lay down after we've had our tea. 🐑❤️

*** RIP Severus Snape 21.04.2016 to. 24.05.2026 ***
I must confess when I wrote the piece about the Grim Reaper in Betty's obituary, I knew he would be visiting again ere too much longer as Severus was slipping inexorably towards the Pearly Gates and sadly this morning they opened wide and he slipped through. 🐑💔🌈
This brings to an end a bit of an era for Severus was the very last homebred sheep still with us being the result, along with his brother Cedric, of a liaison between Lavender Brown and Cranmore Presley. What a boy he was, because he had "gone off his legs" my good friend Kerry and I brought him back from the boy field to live in the infirmary almost a year ago. 🐑❤️
What an absolute superstar he was, friendly to a fault, a wonderful eater and just a generally happy little chappy, I am going to miss him more than I can say. 🐑💔
Ten years is not a bad innings for a Ryeland and I would like to think he enjoyed pretty much all of it apart from the last day or so. It's also the first time, since the wonderful Barry and Janet built it just over three years ago, that the infirmary has been totally empty and at the risk of sounding disingenuous, long may it remain so. 🐑❤️
Thank you for being my friend for just over ten years Severus, that's the longest I have ever known a sheep and you are irreplaceable, until we meet again my old mate, I love you. 🐑❤️

Today our six Derbyshire boys Kingsley, Garry, Mark, Spencer, Jeremy and Kyle have gone off to pastures new! No, no, no I haven't sold them but they have gone a mile and a half down the road to live with the eleven other boys. 🐑
I am indebted to our most excellent sheep wranglers Amanda and Elaine (and a liberal sprinkling of rich tea biscuits) for I couldn't have done it on my own. Normally they stick to each other like glue but today Jeremy had decided to play silly buggers but we got them eventually. 🐑🍪
To be honest, I will miss having them at home for I have never met such gregarious sheep (especially Kingsley and Garry) but there is way more grass down there for them and I'm sure they will be happy once they've settled in. I just love the way Amanda took them off to show them the grass! 😂🐑

*** RIP Betty 12.04.2013 to 22.05.2026 ***
OK Mr. Grim Reaper, enough is enough, if I see you anywhere near this place in the next six months I'm going to stick that ruddy scythe of yours some where it doesn't belong! 😡
It saddens me to have to tell you that our darling Betty passed away in her sleep last night. She was a happy little soul last night and ate everything as normal but this morning she has walked the rainbow bridge. 🐑🌈💔
She joined us on the last day of May in 2022 along with Dolly, Annette, Connie and Little Hen when her carers moved to Italy. She has been an absolute trooper, nothing phased her and when her legs stopped working properly about six months ago she took to infirmary life like a duck to water, scroll back a week or two to see her demolishing carrots apples and bananas. 🍌🥕🍏🐑
Thirteen years put her firmly in the OAP category so I can't be too sad (I am though) and I hope she enjoyed her time with us. Thank you for sharing some of your life with us BettyBoo, love you long time. 🐑❤️
