Equine Mediation

Equine Mediation I am currently working my way towards becoming a Recommended Trainer under Kelly Marks and Intelligent Horsemanship. Hello, my name is Claire.

I will still be offering my freelance groom services along side, so my current clients don’t need to panic, I’m not going anywhere! I have always been passionate about animals and have my own mini menagerie at home; my dog, two rabbits, a Hamster, a tank full of tropical fish and horse (and of course my son and husband!). I have cared for horses since I was a child, worked in a pet shop from the a

ge of fourteen, walked neighbours dogs for fun, I even completed my work experience at Kingston Riding Centre. I have since worked for many years in Customer Service in different industries covering large UK and international accounts. I then brought up my son and went back to part time work in a wonderful tack shop which sadly has now closed. That was when my mind was made up, the perfect opportunity to set up and work for myself! It was not hard for me to decide what I wanted to do, just share what I do best, spending time looking after and enjoying animals. I am canine First aid and CPR trained, a BHS gold member, DBS checked and fully insured with Cliverton. We can't be at home for our pets all the time. That's why I founded Amazing Animal Care. Our motto is 'we care when you can't'. I can help you give your pets the care they need. Available seven days a week and fully insured to care for all domestic pets, horses and outdoor birds.

👀🌱 Spotted sycamore seeds falling early? Here’s what to know 🌱👀

We’ve received reports of sycamore seeds already dropping... earlier than usual. This can happen during long spells of warm, dry weather, as some trees try to protect themselves by shedding seeds and leaves ahead of schedule.

While they may seem harmless, sycamore seeds can cause atypical myopathy if eaten by horses, a serious condition that can sadly be fatal in some cases.

Here’s how you can help keep horses safe:

🔎 Check fields and water troughs daily and remove any seeds you find
🚧 Fence off affected areas or move horses to a different field, if possible
🌾 Provide extra forage if grazing is limited, it can reduce the risk of horses snacking on seeds
👀 Know the signs of atypical myopathy and act fast

⚠️ If you're ever unsure or concerned about your horse, call your vet straight away ⚠️

I’m always asking clients to stop and re arrange the line, asking them if they are happy how the line is, pointing out loops that have got smaller round their hand and getting them to pause and re coil, or tails and coils that have grown to the point of tripping over or steping on. I also say use the pause of rearranging the line to their advantage. Not only are you going to make yourself safe, but you get some lovely thinking time, or a lovely pause. Never be in a hurry and never work a line that you aren’t happy with!

TURN OUT DAYTIME OR OVERNIGHT DURING SUMMER, (for a good doer)?

I get asked this question a lot...

The idea of overnight turn out being best for good doers in summer came from the research showing that fructan levels peak in grass during the afternoon and early evening, then drop overnight. The safest time for turnout was therefore proposed to be early hours of the morning.

HOWEVER! its not just fructan levels per kg of grass that matter and TOTAL fructan, sugar and energy (calorie) intake by the grazing horse is more important both for body fat level and laminitis risk. On top of that, fructan levels may remain elevated during cold nights and are also affected by other factors including sun, shade, water availability, temperature, fertilisation, growth rate of grass and how hard it is grazed.

More important than day or night turnout is how much grass your horses have access to and restricting this for good doers is probably more important than when you turn out. Horses do spend less time eating overnight, but that would only really be worthwhile if you're talking about 12 hours out and 12 in. Most owners are turning out for longer than the horse is in, with overnight turnout.

And! horses fed restricted forage during the day may eat more overnight than research on free choice-fed horses would indicate.

Daytime in and overnight turnout suits many in summer in because it helps avoid fly worry and excess heat if there is no shelter in the paddocks. But there are other factors to consider - the most important of which is the amount of grass your horse or pony can eat - if you're trying to ensure safety of grazing for good doers and potential laminitis-prone horse and ponies...

As always, keep monitoring your individual horse or pony to ensure they maintain a healthy body fat level and adjust their diet accordingly.
