As a therapist, part of my job is to help encourage your horse to be easier to deal with when it comes to “behaviours.” What a lot of people don’t realise is that if your horse having a hard time doing something, they’re not doing it purposefully.
I see people who tell me, “my horse won’t pick up a limb.” Guaranteed that this is not your horse being difficult, there’s just too much tension on the muscles and it requires looking at the body first, as the body controls the limbs.
In horse that you can’t pick up a hind limb, this could stem from pain in the iliopsoas muscle and the lumbosacral area is not working correctly. That being the reason means that your horse is in pain and its body won’t allow you to pick up the leg, then if you do manage, they just want to slam that leg back down. That’s due to the pressure it puts on the spine and surrounding muscles.
In a horse that is reluctant to pick up a front limb, can be because of pain in the scapula, ribs or the lower neck compressing the nerves, which can be very painful.
So next time you think that your horse is being difficult, maybe it’s just having a hard time performing the act you require from it…….
I can help …..with palpating your horse to find areas which are painful and tight and to encourage the partnership between you and horse with less stress.
