If you’re a dog owner, especially one with children, or thinking about bringing a dog into your life, I highly recommend reading The Canine Commandments: Be Happy and Safe with Your Dog (2nd Edition) by Dr. Kendal Shepherd, Vet and Animal Behaviourist

This fantastic read offers clear, compassionate guidance for both adults and children on how to interact safely and respectfully with dogs. It’s written in a simple, accessible way and includes great tools like:

✅ The famous Ladder of Aggression
✅ Quizzes and learning objectives to support thoughtful discussion
✅ Practical insights for current or prospective dog owners

What I love most is how it challenges common myths about dog behaviour. Some lovely quotes from the book:

🗣️ "Aggression is an external expression of internal conflict, and arises out of a complex mix of instinctive and learned responses to the environment."

🗣️ "If dogs or people get angry and aggressive, it is often because they feel threatened. It is not because they are 'the boss', nor does it make them 'the boss'."

🗣️ "Dogs have simply no idea of our human concepts of right and wrong and certainly do not choose what to do based on whether we think their behaviour is good or bad."

This book is a brilliant resource for adults with children to learn and understand dogs better and build a safer, more loving bond. 🐾❤️

It’s much cooler today, but I’m still making sure to meet the individual needs of each dog in my care.

Large breed, elderly, young, and flat face breeds are among some of the dogs that struggle more in the heat.

Sticking to nice shady walks, with some of the dogs wearing their very dapper cool coats.
That said, even with the help of cool coats, it’s so important to be sensible , dogs should never be walked in the heat of the day.

Early mornings, later in the evenings, and providing enrichment activities at home are much safer options when temperatures rise.

We often label dogs as stubborn, angry, or naughty, but what if the real story is that they’re in pain, scared, or just trying to meet a need?

This brilliant graphic (credit Trick Woofs) is a reminder that behaviour is communication. If your dog is struggling, it’s not about disobedience, it’s a call for help.

If you’re unsure why your dog is behaving a certain way, don’t guess. Reach out to a qualified behaviourist (like me!) who can help you understand what’s really going on.
Above all else: always be kind 🐾 ❤️

The paddling pool is now out and ready on the secure field for your dogs to enjoy a splash, cool down, and play!
As the weather starts to warm up, it’s important to help our furry friends adjust to the rising temperatures.

Please be extra mindful of dogs who may struggle more in the heat.
This includes:
Elderly dogs
Very young dogs
Large breeds
Double- coated breeds
Those with medical conditions,
Young adolescent males
Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds.

These pups can overheat more quickly and need a bit of extra care.

Instead of high-energy activities like excessive running, try engaging your dog in gentler alternatives such as scent work or enrichment games in a shady area. These are not only stimulating but also much safer in the heat.

Let’s keep our dogs happy, healthy, and cool this summer! ☀️

🐾 Let’s Talk Walking Equipment for Your Dog 🐾

Finding the right equipment for your dog can make a world of difference. Walks should be comfortable, safe, and enjoyable for both you and your dog.

🎯 The goal? A walk where you feel in control and your dog feels relaxed and secure.

✅ No matter what gear you use, dogs should be taught to walk calmly on the lead—this helps avoid injuries (for both of you!) and makes walks much more enjoyable.

🦴 Collars vs. Harnesses

I don’t recommend walking dogs on a collar. Dogs can easily slip out of them, and if they pull, it can cause strain or even injury to the neck.

A well-fitted harness is usually the safest and most comfortable option for most dogs. And remember—it should always be introduced gradually and positively.

✨ Double clip harnesses (with front and back clips) can be helpful for larger dogs, but they should be used carefully. Constant pulling, even in a harness, can still affect a dog’s gait and comfort over time.

🤔 What About Head Collars?

Head collars aren’t my go-to. They can feel uncomfortable for dogs and may tighten around sensitive areas of the face.

BUT—there are situations where they can help. For example:
👉 A strong dog walked by someone smaller in build
👉 Guardians with limited mobility or physical challenges

If a head collar is used, it must be introduced positively and used kindly. The ultimate goal should be to transition to a harness once the dog and guardian have built confidence and control together.

🐶 Let’s Talk Muzzles

Muzzles have a stigma—but they shouldn’t. Some dogs are legally required to wear one, and in other cases, it’s simply the responsible thing to do.

Muzzling isn’t about judging a dog. It’s about keeping everyone safe and setting the dog up for success.

💡 Muzzle training should always be positive—introduce it slowly, pair it with treats and praise, and help your dog feel GOOD about wearing it.

💛 Walks Should Be a Joy—for Everyone

Walks aren’t just about getting from A to B. They’re about connection, enrichment, and letting your dog experience the world around them.

So choose the right equipment, train with kindness, and above all...

🐾 LET THEM SNIFF! 🐾

Your dog’s nose is their way of reading the world—sniffing isn’t a distraction, it is the walk!

🙋‍♀️ Got questions about equipment? Please don't hesitate to get in touch. I'd be more than happy to help!
