❗DANGERS OF ROAD SALT❗

• Paw irritation: The salt is corrosive and can cause dryness, cracked pads, and painful irritation in a dog’s paws.

• Ingestion and toxicity: When dogs lick their paws to clean them, they ingest the salt. This can lead to gastrointestinal upset, excessive thirst, and, in severe cases, salt toxicity which can cause tremors, seizures, or even death.

• Dehydration: Road salt is a desiccant, meaning it draws moisture from the skin and paws, which can lead to dehydration.

• Worsening injuries: Once a paw is cracked, it’s more painful and vulnerable to further injury from salt, gravel, and ice, potentially leading to infections or pododermatitis.

❗HOW TO PROTECT YOUR DOG❗

• Wipe and wash paws: After walks, thoroughly wipe and rinse your dog’s paws to remove any salt and chemicals. If they are showing signs of discomfort, consider applying a paw balm or antibiotic ointment after cleaning, but see a vet if you are unsure what to do.

• Use pet-safe alternatives: Use pet-friendly de-icers instead of traditional road salt.

• Limit exposure: On walks, try to steer your dog away from heavily salted areas or choose different routes altogether.

• Keep nails trimmed and paws trimmed: This can prevent salt and other irritants from getting trapped between the paw pads.

• Seek vet care immediately: If your dog shows severe symptoms like seizures, collapse, or extreme pain, get them to an emergency vet clinic right away.

🎄DONT LET YOUR DOG UNWRAP THE PRESENTS EARLY🎄

Christmas presents lying under the tree can prove to be too tempting for our four-legged friends – especially if the gift is edible! It’s best to keep wrapped gifts out of paws reach, as wrapping paper can cause a blockage in your dog’s tummy if too much is eaten and certain edible gifts could contain toxic ingredients.

According to the Veterinary Poisons Information Service, they have already started receiving enquiries involving various festive plants this year. Here is a summary of the species they have most commonly receive calls about:

🐾 Holly - (Ilex aquifolium) Holly can cause – in dogs - hypersalivation, vomiting, inappetence, diarrhoea, lethargy and depression. Animals may also shake their head and smack their lips. Choking on the stiff leaves is also a potential hazard.

🐾 Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) Poinsettia has the reputation of being a toxic plant, but this has been greatly exaggerated. It can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach with hypersalivation and sometimes vomiting.

🐾 Mistletoe (Viscum album) The plant is considered to be of low toxicity. It is likely that reports of alarming effects refer to American mistletoe (Phoradendron flavescens) and not European mistletoe (Viscum album). Ingestion of the berries of European mistletoe may cause gastrointestinal upset.

🐾 Christmas Trees - These trees are considered to be of low toxicity. Ingestion may cause a mild gastrointestinal upset and they could cause mechanical obstruction or physical injury (some needles are sharp).

🐾 Ivy (Hedera species) The ivy used in wreaths and decorations is Hedera helix (not Toxicodendron radicans, the American poison ivy). Ivy may cause gastrointestinal upset when ingested. Where there is significant or prolonged skin contact, Hedera species can cause both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis.

🐾 Lilies (Lilium species) Many households will have lilies at Christmas, and all parts of this plant, even the pollen, are extremely toxic to cats and cause severe kidney damage. Lilies are not hazardous to dogs and may cause only mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested.
