More than 500 independent pet retailers across the UK threw open their doors for National Pet Shop Day last year - and the response was incredible.

There were window displays that stopped people in their tracks, store events that brought whole communities together, competitions that had tails wagging, and shops that reminded their customers exactly why local always wins.

This year we want even more shops to be involved. If you're looking for inspiration, you can browse last year’s case studies here: https://nationalpetshopday.com/case-studies/

We are delighted to share the official headline supporters for National Pet Shop Day 2026…

Returning for a second year, we are proud to have both British Independent Retailers Association - Bira and Pet Industry Federation - PIF supporting the campaign once again.

Their contributions had a huge impact last year, and we are so glad they’re back to strengthen our collective voice for independent pet retail across the UK.

Not only that, we get to welcome a new addition - Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA Ltd)!

As the voice of the ornamental fish industry, OATA represents retailers, importers and manufacturers across the aquatics sector, and their involvement helps extend the campaign across the full breadth of the independent pet trade.

This collaboration is to remind pet owners of the expertise, care and community value their local pet shop offers.

We say we value our local pet shops. The research says we mean it.

67% of pet owners believe independent pet shops are important to their community. 57% say they would be upset if theirs closed. More than half would even pay a little more to support one.

But our shopping habits tell a different story. Only 12% of pet owners name an independent as their main source of pet products, and nearly one in five say they never visit their local pet shop in a typical month.

National Pet Shop Day 2026 is here to address that.

Taking place on Saturday 11th July 2026, this is a national call to pet owners to turn appreciation into action, and a chance for independent retailers to remind their communities exactly what they offer.

The love is already there. Now it's time to act on it. Register today at nationalpetshopday.com.

Independent pet shops are at the heart of their communities, offering advice and a personal service that keep pets healthy and their owners informed. The proposal to reclassify common flea and tick treatments would make these essential products much harder to access and far less affordable for pet owners. We stand with British Independent Retailers Association - Bira and believe accessible pet healthcare should be protected, not restricted. The government needs to hear what you have to say before 11th June 2026. Please take the time to share your thoughts.

Bira is calling on the government to halt plans that could remove common flea treatments from pet shop shelves, warning the move would damage high street businesses and leave pet owners facing higher costs.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, said: “Independent pet shops are community assets. They provide knowledgeable, affordable, accessible service to pet owners, often for routine products that owners have relied on for years. Removing flea treatments from their shelves, through a regulatory process that has involved no retail impact assessment and no meaningful consultation with our sector, is simply wrong.”

The UK government is reviewing whether flea and tick spot-on treatments containing Fipronil and Imidacloprid should be reclassified, meaning they could only be purchased through a Vet or Suitably Qualified Person (SQP).

But for millions of pet owners, accessible, affordable pet healthcare matters. These products are a trusted part of keeping their animals healthy. Reclassification would place real barriers in the way of that, limiting where these treatments can be bought, and making them significantly harder to access for those who need them most.

We believe the solution lies in better information and responsible use, not reduced access. NOAH's (National Office of Animal Health) 'Use It Right, Treat Them Right' campaign is a perfect example of this, guiding pet owners on how to use these treatments safely and responsibly.

The government's Call for Evidence is now open, and they want to hear from everyday pet owners who use these products. Your response could directly influence the outcome of this review. The deadline is 11th June 2026.

Registration for National Pet Shop Day 2026 is now open!

It’s back to close the gap between how much pet owners say they value their local independent pet shop, and where they actually shop.

Our recent research shows that 67% of pet owners say independent pet shops are important to their community - yet only 12% name one as their main source of pet products.

National Pet Shop Day is set to change that. And your shop is at the heart of it.

Upon your registration, you'll receive:

-A free promo pack, full of NPSD branded goodies
-Access to our PR & Social Media Toolkit, packed with ready-to-use ideas and free downloadable assets
-A listing on our interactive store map so local pet owners can find you
-The chance to win a £500 voucher in our best activities competition

Register now at nationalpetshopday.com. Let's show the country that independent pet shops are here to stay.
