☀️HOT PAVEMENT WARNING☀️

Yes, even on warm days, in certain conditions, pavements can become hot enough to cause pain, discomfort and even burn your dog’s paws.
Although you may think your dog’s paw pads are quite tough, it’s important to remember that they are skin and can be just as sensitive as the bottom of your feet.

On sunny days, pavements can be deceptively hot and usually be much warmer than the air outside. Dark and dense pavements easily absorb heat from the sun and are good at keeping hold of it and releasing it slowly. Natural surfaces, including grass, tend to be much cooler, as plants release water to help cool themselves down.

🔸HOW TO CHECK🔸
The best way to tell if a pavement is too hot for your dog to walk on is to place the back of your hand on the pavement for SEVEN SECONDS. If it’s too painful for your hand, then it’s too painful for your dog’s paws.

If you notice your dog limping, looking uncomfortable or whimpering, check the bottom of their paws and the temperature of the pavement with the back of your hand.
If your dog’s paws look red, swollen or blistered then it’s important that you quickly take them off the hot pavement and contact your vet for advice as soon as possible.

💦DOG HYDRATION💦

Water is hugely important for good health, and it’s no different for our furry friends.

The problem is, not all dogs are as keen to frequently lap up water, and a reduced water intake can quickly lead to dehydration and sickness.

So if you find your dog not drinking water throughout the day, it’s important to try to get to the root cause and do your best to promote healthy water drinking habits.

If you notice your dog has any of the following symptoms:
• Sunken eyes
• Dry gums
• Lethargy
• Weakness
• Collapses
• Loss of skin elasticity

Call your vet immediately for advice. Dehydration in dogs is a common, potentially life-threatening condition. If left untreated dehydration can cause serious organ damage and even death.

Here’s to all the dog walkers who have had to cancel walks this week.

To the ones living paycheck to paycheck, making the heartbreaking decision to put the welfare of the dogs first — even when rent is due, bills are piling up, and the food shop still needs paying for.

You are my heroes.

I feel incredibly lucky that my main outgoing is my vehicle, because I know for so many others, these weather extremes are hitting hard. And sadly, this is becoming our new normal — wet winters, unbearable spring and summer heat, one extreme after another.

Over the couple of years, so many new dog walkers have started their businesses, stepping into this industry at one of the toughest times imaginable.

The weather hasn’t just affected our income — it’s affected our mental health too. The stress, the uncertainty, the constant worry… it takes its toll.

And on top of all that, the cost of living has risen so dramatically.

Fuel costs, vehicle maintenance, insurance, food prices, rent, mortgages, utilities — everything has gone up, while many of us are earning less because of cancelled walks and unsafe temperatures.

It’s an exhausting balance trying to keep a business afloat while also trying to survive personally. For so many dog walkers, it feels like no matter how hard we work, we’re constantly trying to catch up.

But still, we keep going.

Why?

Because this is more than just a job to us. It’s a lifestyle. It’s a passion. It’s something we pour our whole hearts into every single day.

No matter the weather, no matter the setbacks, we continue showing up because we love these dogs like they’re our own.

So to every dog walker struggling quietly this week — I see you, I respect you, and I hope you’re proud of yourself for putting the dogs first, even when it costs you.
