☀️🐶 HOT WEATHER REMINDER 🐶☀️
With the warmer weather continuing over the next few days, it’s really important we help keep our dogs safe, cool, and comfortable 💚
Dogs can struggle in the heat far quicker than we do, especially our flat-faced breeds, older dogs, puppies, and dogs with thicker coats. Even temperatures that feel manageable to us can become dangerous for them very quickly.
Here are some simple ways to help your dogs stay safe during the warmer weather:
💦 Plenty of fresh water available at all times
🌳 Choose shady walking routes and avoid peak heat hours
🐾 Walk earlier in the morning or later in the evening
🧠 Swap long physical exercise for calmer mental enrichment like sniffing games and scavenger hunts
🚫 Avoid hot pavements — if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws
🧊 Cooling mats, damp towels, paddling pools, frozen enrichment, and cool collars can all help
🚗 Never leave dogs in cars, even for a few minutes
😴 Allow plenty of rest breaks and avoid overexcitement in the heat
Signs of heatstroke can include:
⚠️ Excessive panting
⚠️ Drooling
⚠️ Lethargy
⚠️ Vomiting
⚠️ Bright red gums
⚠️ Wobbling or collapse
If you notice these signs, move your dog somewhere cool immediately, offer water, cool them gradually with cool (not ice cold) water, and contact your vet straight away.
At Wags And Wisdom, walks will continue to be adapted to suit the temperatures with earlier starts, shaded routes, water available throughout walks and back at the van, alongside plenty of sniffing and calmer enrichment activities 💚🐾
Stay safe everyone and give your dogs an extra cuddle from us 🐶💚
