Meet Dylan! 🐾

Dylan was referred to our Emergency & Critical Care department back in March for further investigations of multiple ulcerative skin lesions, severe kidney injury and very low platelets. 7-10 days before Dylan's owners had notices a single skin lesion. The skin lesions were increasing in number, he became anorexic, lethargic and showing severe blood loss. After investigations Dylan was diagnosed with 'Alabama Rot'.

He received intensive care for 9 days where he faced multiple complications, his recovery was challenging and slow. But thanks to the ICU care and the love and determination of his owners Dylan was sent home. He continued to improve week by week, regaining energy and feeling himself again.

In June, as you can see, Dylan enjoyed a great holiday with his family on the beach. On the way back Dylan, stopped to visit his second family at Blaise!

Meet Kona! 🐾

Kona is a lovely girl who came to see the neurology service after suddenly becoming unable to walk. On examination she could not stand and had minimal to no movement in any of her legs. When neurologist Emma tested her reflexes (such as a kneecap reflex or her ability to move her feet in response to them being tickled) they were severely reduced to absent. These signs can be caused by a problem in the neck and so she had an MRI scan of that area to investigate. What was found was quite a surprise. Her spine was normal but the scan did identify a tumour at the level of her thyroid gland. It is a rare phenomenon, but there are reports that some tumours can cause what is called a polyneuropathy which causes weakness in multiple nerves in the body. In Kona’s case this was all the nerves supplying her limbs. The soft tissue surgery service was able to remove the mass and remarkably within a couple of weeks Kona regained the ability to walk and her reflexes had returned. Not only has the type of tumour not been reported to cause polyneuropathy before but the speed of Konas recovery was also much faster than similar cases. We couldn’t be happier with Konas improvement and are proud that through multiple disciplines (neurology, anaesthesia, imaging and soft tissue surgery) we were able to achieve a great outcome.
Its great to see Kona (on the left) pictured running with her brother again through the woods and back to normal! 💜

Meet Devon one of our imaging nurses! 🩺

Devon started volunteering in veterinary practice while still at high school and found this experience cemented her childhood dream of becoming a veterinary nurse. She studied veterinary nursing and practice management at Harper Adams University and graduated with a first class honours degree. Following this she worked in mixed practice for 2 years before moving to a solely small animal practice. During that time she developed a passion for imaging and so became the imaging nurse which involved learning how to use the new on-site CT scanner. After finishing maternity leave she decided to locum for a while but missed the progression a permanent job offers, so after a few years she took the jump into referral nursing and started at Blaise as an imaging nurse. Here she has greatly developed her skills by learning how to use new machines such as MRI and fluoroscopy. As the team is growing, she is becoming involved in training of other staff on the complex imaging machines and continues to develop her skills and knowledge through in house and external CPD.

"Blaise have supported me learning some new skills and I am excited to support other nurses to do the same in the future. The jump into referral nursing hasn't been without its challenges but it has also been so rewarding and I feel like I have grown so much as a nurse."

Meet Ruby! 🐾

Ruby was referred to our Internal Medicine team after her owners noticed increased panting, exercise intolerance, and a reduced appetite. Investigations led by Camilla revealed a large mass on her left adrenal gland. Hormonal testing confirmed a pheochromocytoma—a tumour that produces excess catecholamines.

Ruby underwent a complex adrenalectomy. Unfortunately, due to the tumour invading nearby vessels, her left kidney could not be preserved. However, thanks to exceptional collaboration between surgeons Lara and Maria, our Anaesthesia team Daisy & Anastasia, and ECC clinician Marta and colleagues, Ruby made a full recovery, with the tumour completely excised.

We’re so proud of the multidisciplinary teamwork at Blaise that gave Ruby a second chance!

Lovely little Alfie was initially referred to Blaise for recurrence of difficulty urinating due to bladder stones. In the past he had undergone surgery to remove stones from his bladder. The problem recurred and further investigations showed that the underlying cause of the bladder stones was an extrahepatic portosystemic shunt (liver shunt). This is a congenital condition where an abnormal blood vessel redirects blood flow from the digestive tract to the systemic circulation bypassing the liver.
The liver’s primary role is to filter toxins and waste products from the blood. With a shunt these harmful substances enter the blood stream leading to various symptoms and potential complications.

Alfie underwent surgery with Soft Tissue specialist Lara Dempsey to occlude the abnormal blood vessel and redirect the blood flow back through the liver. Alfie’s recent blood tests show that his surgery has been successful! We are very pleased for Alfie and his owner and its great to see him celebrating his latest birthday!! 🐾
