Trainer Matt has been working with this extremely anxious, fear aggressive GSD.
Something that has become apparent over the years to me certainly, is trainer's lack of ability to identify the causality of a dogs reactivity , and to just rigidly stick to a methodology regardless, wether it be avoidance, correction, or trying to convince the dog with reward.
Train the dog and the issue in front of you. Lack of fluidity shows a lack of understanding.
Reactive dogs who are driven by fear donβt get better by being wrapped in cotton wool and hidden from the world.
The reality sits with safe, gradual, controlled exposure.
You cannot correct fear out of a dog.
Itβs not glamorous, its repetitive, itβs not instant, and yes sometimes they will react or fall back into an old habit. That doesnβt mean youβve ruined them. It means youβve found the point of intolerance where the work needs to be concentrated.
Progress shows as small shifts. These are the signs of a dog learning to cope, not collapsing under pressure, and learning new associations.
Pretending that any exposure is harmful is not only unhelpful, but extremely unkind.
If we avoid everything forever, the dog stays stuck. The process should be safe, controlled, and consistent.
Thatβs what changes behavioural associations for the long term betterment of the dog and owner.
