This is so important 👌🏼
Dog bites are on the rise 😔
Most behaviour cases that I see at the moment are dogs that have bitten either a dog or a person and sadly one of my clients little dogs was almost killed by a big dog last week as she walked along minding her own business.
Dogs usually bite due to being fearful, they have usually given plenty of signals to the humans .
These dogs are not XL bullies!
They are cockapoos being picked up and grabbed by children.
They are adolescent dogs who have been allowed to mouth hands as puppies and learned that biting people is fun.
They are old dogs resting and someone leans on them.
Many of them are resource guarding.
People who stick out their hand at unknown dogs on leads who ignore owners and ignore dogs body language are being bitten.
Untrained dogs are running up to people jumping and biting.
Sometimes the bites are when people are breaking up fights between dogs.
Some of the dogs I see have had electric collars, been pinned down, had corrector sprays used on them for punishment and the aggression has got worse (of course)
Most of the dogs are barely hanging on emotionally due to past trauma, being rescued or they are painful and just want to be left alone😢
We NEED to get better at advocating for our dogs, teaching them that WE will keep them safe, they don’t need to stress or defend.
More dog owners need to step up and attend training classes & be proactive as soon as issues are spotted like poor recall or growling at dogs and people.
More owners need to be BRAVE and not worry about offending someone and say “don’t touch my dog”
Dogs are struggling to fit into our fast paced life..they are our family members BUT they are dogs!
So to cut down on dog bites
🌟Seek professional help for your dog if there is a problem
🌟Let sleeping dogs lie
🌟Don’t reach over dogs heads
🌟Ask before you touch a dog
🌟If a dog growls move away
🌟Education on dog body language (see comments)
And please don’t ever think your dog wouldn’t bite.. any dog in pain or in a fearful state would bite
I was sent an image but at the time of its posting I could not give credit as didn’t know its original source until a few mins ago.
I posted this image because although I didn’t know the source, it reflects my daily work, dogs bites are on the rise due to lack of education.
I have been told the image I used which is of statistics of dog bites in the UK has upset some people so I’ve removed it, which is a shame as it’s really great!!
When we know better, we do better, knowledge is power.
Anything we can do to prevent dog bites, injury, euthanasia to dogs, we need to be better at!
These people are doing great work to promote responsible pet ownership which I completely support
I am now using an alternative image which shouldn’t upset or take credit from anyone..
And if I have upset anyone (and I’m not sure if I have?) I want to say that’s not my intention.., I just want dogs and humans to live safely and happy together😁
I’m not savvy on social media etiquette or rules, I’m more interested in educating dog owners and helping dogs.
Credits from the original photo are in the comments below..the facts are.. dog bites are on the rise and we need to educate ourselves on why is this happening?
