Yesterday vets Henry and Oliver attended a joint forces training day - with 24 mounted police horses attending from all over the UK along with public order and canine units.

Heavy and working horses continue to be an exciting part of our day to day caseload and we love seeing them out and about!

☀️It’s Pimms weather! ☀️

Whilst you’re enjoying the sun, keep a close eye on your horses and ponies this week. We have seen an increased number of heat-stress and tying up episodes over the weekend. Horses are normally well adapted to dealing with increases in temperature but particularly when there has been a rapid change in temperature they might need some help:
- always ensure access to copious clean water
- provide or ensure shade wherever possible
- ensure stables are well ventilated
- cool water hose-offs and sponge downs
- consider keeping horses in if cooler than being turned out
- providing frozen ice blocks with carrots/apples inside can be a fun way to cool down
- check your horse’s temperature daily and talk to one of our vets if it’s above 38.0°C at rest

If your horse is showing any signs of heat stress, please don’t hesitate to give us a call on 01865 560252

As ever, we are available 24/7 for emergencies and advice!

Use this as a great opportunity to check your passports and check that your horses are fully vaccinated 🦠💉

We’ve been seeing a lot of colic cases lately, and early identification can make a huge difference in the outcome. Here are some of the subtle signs to look out for that your horse may be starting to colic:

- dull and lethargic ‘not quite right’
- slightly off food or water
- laying down more frequently or for longer than normal
- increase in breathing rate or effort
- pawing the ground or repeatedly getting up and down
- subtle increase in temperature

If you ever think your horse is colicking, call us at the first instance on 01865 560252 and we can advise you 24/7.
