Autumn is a lovely time in Anglesey for bracing dog walks, cozy hot chocolates and early evening suppers at a local pub! Last night we wandered by the lake and saw bats swooping, squirrels hoarding and toads exploring. We have made apple mint jelly using the water mint that is flourishing around the pond and collected blackberries for crumbles and jam. We still have one week available if you would like a quick trip to Anglesey this autumn www.lakehouseholidays.com

Anglesey is such a fascinating island. This September, some of the historic sites, landmarks and hidden gems will offer visitors free entry, events or guided tours. It’s all part of Open Doors — Wales’ annual contribution to the European Heritage Days initiative, which invites heritage organisations, private owners, local authorities and others to open their doors or offer activities to the public free of charge during September. If you are visiting us or just living/ staying on Anglesey, you might like to take a look at this page: https://cadw.gov.wales/visit/whats-on/open-doors-events. I know we will take the opportunity to visit Plas Newydd, as seen in the recent film Madfabulous.

Since we moved here at the end of April, it's been pretty full on. It's not often you move into a house where guests are staying and know the place better than you. Fortunately, the wonderful previous owners, Jean and Keith, stuck around to help us for the first week or so. This meant we've been able to find our feet and try to learn everything about this beautiful place. I wanted to share what we've been doing to improve the lake in this post. Having had a very hot summer, the fish have very inconveniently been spawning until very late in the year (bodes well for next year). As soon as they stopped, Keith and the rather wonderful Russ Boaz were in the lake, clearing it. We're aiming for a 25% w**d cover to remain. This will provide a safe space for young fry but also for the larger fish to hide from predatory birds. The w**d that will be left will help provide oxygen during the day, and in the nighttime, we've installed a new aerator. The oxygen levels on the lake are checked regularly. Keith has put in a new bench from one of the trees that had to be felled, which has proved very popular for the carp fishing. Our wonderful groundsman, Aled, has been helping us develop the margins to ensure we encourage plenty of butterflies and bees. This has meant we're already seeing an increase in the variety of bird species from our weekly surveys. Birds we're starting to see include linnets, bullfinches, and tree creepers. We've also been assessed by local nature groups and have been found to have a very high number of the very rare and protected water voles. This has meant we've closed the pegs at the back of the little lake in order to protect their habitats. There are still plenty of pegs, and there hasn't been an occasion so far when someone doesn't have a space to fish. We make daily checks on the lake to ensure everything is the best it can be, hence Keith donning his waders and getting into the boat to remove a crisp bag!! It truly has been the best thing we could have ever done, moving here. We're drawing to the end of the busy summer season and can't wait to see what autumn brings us. Thank you to everyone who has already visited and supported us, and huge thanks to our team here, Julie , Howard and Aled for keeping us going and being the best friends and supporters we could have possibly had.

As the warmth of summer gives way to the vibrant hues of autumn, the lakehouse comes alive! 🌞 The seeds and fruits are bursting forth, full of promise and possibility. I'm thrilled to make our first batch of apple and watermint jelly, with blackberry crumbles and crab apple jelly soon to follow. And who knows, maybe the squirrels will surprise us with a hidden stash of hazelnuts! 🐿️ We have one week left to savour the season: 02/10/2026 - 09/10/2026, with discounted rates on our stunning lake-facing accommodations. Treat yourself to a rejuvenating getaway at Ty Llyn (£880 down to £800), our luxurious three-bedroom cottage with a whirlpool bath, or Hafod (£500 down to £450), our cozy two-bedroom caravan. Both offer the perfect blend of comfort and tranquility, with central heating to warm your spirit on crisp autumn days.

What a wonderful Week at Lakehouse. We have been trying to explore as many things available to visitors as possible. On Tuesday we tried Melin Llynon, they were delicious. If you plan on visiting, make sure you get there early as they tend to run out by 1pm and take a look at their website to plan what you want. Thursday we explored a different boat ride, the rib boat with Anglesey Boat Trips . Due to strong winds, we couldn't visit Puffin Island but we had an exhilerating ride with donuts and speed all the way down the Menai Strait. Following that a lovely dinner Gazelle Hotel. The views from this pub are unbeatable and the food is excellent every time we visit. 4 of our guests joined me for Beach Yoga with KYoga. Then we have two families from Liverpool fishing for the day. Now time for a rest I think!

If you are visiting, this is our local chip shop. https://finneys-fish-and-chips.square.site It is fabulous.
You can order ahead on line from the comfort of your cottage to avoid the queues. We tend to go once a week and eat them sitting on the beach, the seagulls are polite here. The walk is only a short 5 minute walk or you can drive down and there is free parking right on the beach for 1 hour. We love the combo boxes and also the curry sauce. It is also worth trying the cheesecakes 😉 https://youtu.be/uWNTmHkVfQE?si=ScYrOf6sl0jc1-yi

Award winning, Sustainable Fish and chips, cooked with pride made without gluten.
