The countdown is on for the Easter Bunny! ๐Ÿฐ

Heres a little bit of advice to keep your pets safe over the holiday:

๐Ÿฃ Make sure you find ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ of the Easter Bunnyโ€™s eggs - we donโ€™t want your pet finding any left behind!

๐Ÿฃ Watch out for the chocolate/sweet wrappers: sometimes our pets think the wrappers just at tasty as the treats, so dispose of wrappers as soon as possible and secure that bin!

๐Ÿฃ If your pet has eaten wrappers, or anything else that they shouldnโ€™t have, such as decorations, ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜‚๐˜€ immediately for further advice.

๐Ÿฃ Be mindful of flowers: lilies are toxic to cats. Cats do not need to eat the flower for it to be dangerous - any exposure, to any part of the plant can cause toxicity.

๐Ÿฃ Do not give your pet foods such as hot cross buns or anything containing chocolate, raisins, grapes, sultanas, garlic or onions as these are toxic to your pet.

๐Ÿฃ If you believe your pet has eaten any of the above, ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜‚๐˜€ immediately for further advice.

๐Ÿฃ Avoid giving your pet fatty leftovers as this can cause pancreatitis.

๐Ÿฃ If you have company over, offer your pet a safe quiet space where they can go to rest at any time.

๐ŸŒฟ Ewe & Lamb Health During Lambing Season ๐Ÿ‘

Lambing season โ€” whether indoor or out on spring grass โ€” is a critical time for flock productivity. With our unpredictable weather and common mineral challenges, preparation and close monitoring are key.

๐Ÿ‘ Pre-Lambing Priorities (4โ€“6 Weeks Before)

โœ”๏ธ Body Condition Scoring (BCS):

Thin ewes are at higher risk of twin lamb disease; overfat ewes are more prone to lambing difficulties.

โœ”๏ธ Vaccination:

Ensure boosters for clostridial diseases (e.g. products like Heptavac-P) are given 4โ€“6 weeks pre-lambing to maximise colostral antibody transfer.

โœ”๏ธ Scanning & Grouping:

Use scanning results to group singles, twins, and triplets for appropriate feeding.

โœ”๏ธ Late Pregnancy Nutrition:

Energy demand rises sharply in the final 6 weeks. Supplement appropriately to reduce risk of:
Twin Lamb Disease (pregnancy toxaemia)
Hypocalcaemia (milk fever)

โœ”๏ธ Mineral Status:

In many areas, selenium, iodine, and cobalt deficiencies are common. Assess need before supplementing.

๐Ÿ‘ At Lambing

โœ”๏ธ Colostrum Intake is Vital:

50ml/kg within 2 hours
200ml/kg within 24 hours
Good colostrum management reduces watery mouth and joint ill.

โœ”๏ธ Navel Dipping:
Use strong iodine (10%) as soon as possible after birth โ€” especially important in indoor lambing systems.

โœ”๏ธ Hygiene:

Clean, dry individual pens reduce risk of E. coli scours and navel infections.

โœ”๏ธ Weather Awareness (Outdoor Lambing):
Spring weather can change rapidly. Provide shelter and monitor closely for hypothermia in cold, wet conditions.

๐ŸŒฑ Post-Lambing Monitoring
โœ”๏ธ Watch ewes for:
Mastitis
Metritis
Prolapse complications
Poor mothering

โœ”๏ธ Watch lambs for:
Hypothermia
Watery mouth
Scours
Mismothering

Letโ€™s talk ๐…๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ฌ:

The most common ectoparasite!

Fleas are very small insects that can affect many animals including dogs, cats, wildlife and even humans. When a flea lands on your pet (their host), it will bite to feed on blood. These bites can cause ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด, ๐ข๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง and over time ๐ก๐š๐ข๐ซ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ. In some cases, it can cause ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ or even ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜€ from one animal to another ๐Ÿˆ

Fleas reproduce quickly (each flea lays approx. 25 eggs every 24 hours!). These eggs often fall off your pet into the environment, such as bedding, carpets, furniture, and cracks in flooring, making infestations challenging to control. Flea eggs & pupae can lie dormant in the environment until ideal conditions cause them to hatch, such as warmth or vibrations, which would indicate a host is nearby ๐Ÿ•

๐Ÿคฉ Here is some advice for treating an infestation in your home:

โœ… Treat all pets at home with the parasite treatment prescribed by your vet

โœ… Do nฬฒoฬฒtฬฒ wash or let your pet get wet for a minimum of 48 hours after a spot-on treatment as this will reduce its effectiveness

โœ… Wash all bedding and clothing at minimum 60 degrees Celsius to ensure any fleas, eggs and larvae present are killed completely

โœ… Ask us about a household spray, such as Indorex, to help kill fleas found in the environment

โœ… Hoover daily and thoroughly to ensure no flea eggs are left in the environment. This will include hoovering the floor, skirting boards and furniture โ€“ it is estimated that 95% of flea eggs, larvae and pupae live in the environment, not on a host!

โœ… You must immediately throw away the hoover bag after each hoover to prevent eggs from hatching, further worsening the infestation

โœ… Keep up to date with parasite treatment to prevent an infestation in the future

Prevention is better than cure!
