Post 2 of Fun Facts From Fudge!!

Did you know that a muzzled dog is not the sign of a dangerous dog but rather a responsible owner?

Dogs might have to wear a muzzle for a number for many different reasons, this can include being uncomfortable around other dogs, needing it for formal handling and veterinary checks/treatments, being nervous out and about, owner confidence, having a high prey drive, scavenging and ingesting foreign objects, and for legal purposes.

Here at Canine Companions we believe in breaking the stigma around muzzles, muzzle training should always be done positively and at the dog's pace so that they are always comfortable to wear one. Its better to have the ability to wear one and not need to, then to need to and the dog being under pressure and stress to learn how to.

Its also important to remember to get a muzzle where the dog has enough room to breathe, pant, drink and have food reward through it.

Fun Facts From Fudge!!

Do you know how you greet an unknown dog? Many people still make the mistake of approaching the dog and offering their hand to sniff. This is risky as its invading the dog's personal space and can lead to a bite if the dog is nervous or aggressive. After speaking to the owner the way a person should ask a dog to say hello is to turn to the side crouch down and tap their leg inviting the dog to go over. If the dog approaches and is happy hurrah you've made a new friend! However if it refuses to go over, or shows distance increasing behaviour (growling, barking, lip curling, a hard stare, hackles going up.

Refusing to say hello can also look like, walking away, turning their head away, paw lifting, rolling on their back exposing their belly, and lip licking. A dog deserves to have their boundaries respected and interaction should never be forced.

Bit of a different post from me today but one I feel incredibly passionate about. The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 has been nothing but an utter failure since its creation, bite cases have dramatically risen so it has not protected the public in the slightest and is one of many things that needs to be dramatically changed in the industry.

I have campaigned against Breed Specific Legislation for many years, we need an evidence based alternative in which more is done around investigating cases, tighter regulations of breeders, licencing for owners and mandatory training based on trust and building a good relationship between owner and dog. Having a back ground in rescue BSL and the DLO was one of the many things that severely affected my mental health. Seeing medically healthy and behaviourally amazing dogs have to be put to sleep because of they way they look and measure. This is wrong. Nothing deserves to die simply because of how it looks. We need to end this stigma and stand up for those that sit for us!

Below is the link to the petition. I urge you to sign and share, otherwise more breeds will be added, more hearts will be broken, and more lives will be lost.

As all my clients know I run a strict hot weather policy and always think safety first! My love for their best friends runs deep which is why both with the walking side and training and behaviour side I run reduced services or even cancel them entirely. Always making sure to give people advanced warning when temperatures rise.

This is something all petcare professionals need to do, and if they don't that is a huge red flag which should get you looking for someone who does. No dog has ever died from missing a walk. But plenty have from walking in the heat, and heatstroke in dogs is no joke. They have at best a 50/50 chance of making it should they get heatstroke.

Please I urge you keep your doggos safe! Reduce walks and exercise, don't walk them on pavement in the heat, don't leave them in cars. Provide them with plenty of shade, water, fans and other ways to keep cool. It is simply not worth the risk.

Its been a long time since we've had any training sessions with young master Alf, so we went back to basics with him and gave him some easy wins of loose lead walking with checking in. In the second video we had a surprise blind greet with an on lead dog which he greeted nicely but had a frustrated reaction as we moved away but recoved well. #
